It's been a long time since I've participated in this contest and I've missed it, this time I was surprised that it wasn't about movies or series, but I really liked this theme. After thinking about it for a while I remembered that there was a cooking competition TV show that I used to watch a lot, it was Cupcake wars. Wow! my mouth was salivating at the sight of the delicious desserts they showed on screen, although there were times when I didn't like a couple of ingredients.
Hace mucho tiempo que no participo en este concurso y ya lo extrañaba, en esta ocasión me llamó la atención que no se tratara sobre películas o series, pero me gustó mucho este tema. Después de pensarlo por un tiempo recordé que había un programa de televisión de competencia de cocina que yo solía ver mucho, se trata de Cupcake wars. Wow! mi boca salivaba con nada más ver los deliciosos postres que mostraban en pantalla, aunque había ocasiones en que no me gustaban un par de ingredientes.
Some Context
It is an American ttv show where four contestants (accompanied by an assistant) must prepare the best cupcakes based on a specific theme. The competition takes place over three rounds, and in each round one contestant is eliminated. The first round is based on taste, and this is the most challenging part of the show because the contestants must include unusual ingredients that are related to the theme they are working on, e.g. fast food, in the second round the judges evaluate taste and presentation, but the most difficult of the rounds is the third round, where there are only two participants left and each of them must bake and decorate a thousand cupcakes in just two hours, as well as design a sufficiently attractive and beautiful structure to put the cupcakes, although fortunately the show offers each participant 4 assistants (in addition to the one they already have) and a professional carpenter who is in charge of building the structure. The winner gets 10 thousand dollars and the possibility to participate in a famous event that has to do with the theme of the show, for example: Miss USA,

Es un programa de televisión estadounidense donde cuatro participantes (en compañía de un asistente) deben preparar los mejores cupcakes basándose en un tema en específico. La competencia se lleva a cabo durante tres rondas y en cada una se elimina a un participante. La primera ronda se basa en el sabor, y esta es la parte más desafiante del programa porque los participantes deben incluir ingredientes inusuales pero que tengan que ver con el tema que están tratando, por ejemplo comida rápida, en la segunda ronda los jueces evalúan el sabor y la presentación, pero realmente la más difícil de las rondas es la tercera, donde solo quedan dos participantes y cada uno de ellos debe hornear y decorar mil cupcakes en solo dos horas, además de diseñar una estructura lo suficientemente atractiva y hermosa para poner los cupcakes, aunque afortunadamente el programa le ofrece a cada participante 4 asistentes (además del que ellos ya tienen) y un profesional carpintero que se encarga de construir la estructura. El ganador se lleva 10 mil dólares y la posibilidad de participar en un evento famoso que tiene que ver con el tema que están tratando en el programa, por ejemplo: El miss USA.
I really liked this show and always ended up fantasizing about my sister (who is a chef) being on it and I would go as her assistant, but obviously it was just a fantasy as we don't live in the USA and to top it off I am not good at working under pressure at all, in this show you have to be fast, very fast, and not just physically but you have to think fast and come up with ideas in seconds, so I just preferred to watch the show and have a good time.
Me gustaba mucho este programa y siempre terminaba fantaseando acerca de que mi hermana (que es chef) participaba en él y yo iría como su asistente, pero obviamente solo era una fantasía ya que no vivimos en USA y para colmo no soy buena para trabajar bajo presión en lo absoluto, en este programa hay que ser rápido, muy rápido, y no solo físicamente sino que debes pensar rápido y armar ideas en segundos, así solo prefería mirar el programa y pasar un buen rato.
For me the most challenging part is where the contestants have to look for inspiration among some unusual ingredients on a table, in fact I remember on one occasion there was chicken pie, grilled cheese sandwich, steaks, hamburger and cheese tara with ice cream, I immediately said to my sister "That last ingredient is the one I would choose" I thought it was the most logical but my sister said, "sure, it's the easiest but the idea is that you get something extraordinary with an unusual flavour" and it's true, in those cases the judges take into account the risk that the participants take, then we saw that one of the participants did want to take the risk because she chose a hamburger cupcake, so she added cheddar cheese to the dough 😱, the filling was meat, the icing was cream and ketchup and it also had fries, lettuce and pickles as a topping. I think that was the most terrible cupcake I've ever seen in my life, luckily I didn't get to taste it 🤢 but to my surprise the judges were delighted, pleasantly surprised.
Para mí la parte más desafiante es donde los participantes deben buscar inspiración entre algunos ingredientes inusuales que hay en una mesa, de hecho recuerdo que en una ocasión había tarta de pollo, sándwich de queso a la plancha, filetes de carne, hamburguesa y tara de queso con helado, inmediatamente yo le dije a mi hermana "Ese último ingrediente es el que yo elegiría" creí que era lo más lógico pero mi hermana me dijo, "claro, es el más fácil pero la idea es que logres algo extraordinario con un sabor inusual" y es cierto, en esos casos los jueces toman en cuenta el riesgo que toman los participantes, entonces vimos que una de las participantes sí que quiso tomar el riesgo pues optó por un cupcake de hamburguesa, así que a la masa le añadió queso cheddar 😱, el relleno era carne, el glaseado sería crema y kétchup además de que tenía papas fritas, lechuga y pepinillos como toping. Creo que ese fue el cupcake más terrible que vi en mi vida, afortunadamente no pude probarlo 🤢 pero para mi sorpresa los jueces estuvieron encantados, gratamente sorprendidos.
Without a doubt, the apple pie with ice cream was my favourite because of the sweet flavour of the filling and the crunchiness of the chopped biscuit topping.
Sin lugar a dudas el de tarta de manzana con helado fue mi favorito por el dulce sabor del relleno y la crocancia del toping de galletas troceadas.
But the part I enjoyed the most was the last stage of the programme, where the two remaining participants had to design a structure and bake a thousand cupcakes, it was a very challenging part, plus a clock on the wall showed them how much time they had left and I think that added to the suspense and pressure, sometimes they bumped into each other. I don't think I would like to participate in this competition because I feel it is too much pressure for me, but I really enjoyed watching it on TV, especially the part when the wooden cupcake frames arrived, my favourites were the ones inspired by Tim Burton's universe.
Pero la parte que más disfrutaba era la última etapa del programa, donde los dos participantes restantes debían diseñar una estructura y hornear mil cupcakes, era una parte muy desafiante, además un reloj de la pared les marcaba el tiempo que les restaba y eso creo que añade suspenso y presión, a veces tropezaban unos con otros. Yo creo que no me gustaría participar en este concurso porque siento que es demasiada presión para mí, pero disfrutaba mucho viéndolo en la tv, sobre todo la parte cuando llegaban las estructuras de madera para los cupcakes, mis favoritos fueron los que estaban inspirados en el universo de Tim Burton.
Friends, I really enjoyed participating in this contest, although I don't watch this show anymore because they stopped broadcasting it here in my country, but the truth is that if you haven't seen it I recommend it, there are wonderful ideas to create great cupcakes, although I never recreated any recipe 😜.
Amigos me gustó mucho haber participado en este concurso, aunque ya no veo este programa porque dejaron de transmitirlo aquí en mi país, pero la verdad es que si no lo han visto se los recomiendo, hay maravillosas ideas para crear cupcakes grandiosos, aunque yo nunca recree ninguna receta.
