Brendar Fraser is Charlie, a middle-aged man suffering from depression, low self-esteem and morbid obesity. Realizing that he is in his last days, he decides to do everything he can to recover the relationship he had with his daughter, whom he abandoned as a child and who is now a troubled teenager. This is the premise of The Whale, the new film from acclaimed director Darren Aronofsky.
This movie is a bold capital DRAMA, I have seen it twice and the first time I was captivated, but the second time I thought about how many things could have gone wrong, but Darren Aronofsky does it in a majestic way. Since the news of the film and its premise came out, knowing the director (from requiem for a dream to Mother and the black swan) I said I wanted to see it in theaters because the editing and the way the director shoots is somewhat overwhelming and with that premise it would not only be overwhelming but also difficult to see, but, in this film Aronofsky is far from his previous filmography and he plants himself in a much more realistic and superb scenario, which makes it in turn, very difficult to digest.

Al darse cuenta de que está en sus últimos días decide hacer todo lo posible para recuperar la relación que tenía con su hija, a quien abandonó cuando era una niña y ahora es una adolescente con problemas. Esta es la premisa de The Whale, la nueva película del aclamado director Darren Aronofsky.
Esta película es un DRAMA en mayúsculas y en negrillas, la he visto dos veces y en la primera estuve cautivado, pero en la segunda pensé en la cantidad de cosas que pudieron haber salido mal, pero Darren Aronofsky lo hace de forma majestuosa. Desde que salió la noticia de la película y su premisa, conociendo al director (desde réquiem por un sueño hasta Madre y el cisne negro) dije que la quería ver en cines porque el montaje y la forma de grabar del director es algo agobiante y con esa premisa no solo sería agobiante sino también difícil de ver, pero, en esta película Aronofsky dista mucho de su filmografía anterior y se planta en un escenario mucho más realista y soberbio, que lo hace a su vez, muy difícil de digerir.
However, here the director makes some very interesting choices thanks to his protagonist, as Charlie is a really interesting person. While what you're seeing is partly disgusting and hard to watch, you can't help but see Charlie's humanity and hope in basically everything he does and wants to expose, giving an incredible contrast between what we see and feel, being a very interesting experience.
Sin embargo, aquí el director toma unas decisiones muy interesantes gracias a su protagonista, ya que Charlie es una persona realmente interesante. Mientras lo que estás viendo es en parte asqueroso y difícil de ver, no puedes dejar de ver la humanidad y la esperanza de Charlie en básicamente todo lo que hace y quiere exponer, dando un contraste increíble entre lo que vemos y sentimos, siendo una experiencia muy interesante.
One of the things that surprised me the most is that, watching the film already knowing what was going to happen, I realized the amount of things that the director wants to show, with an incredible photography and with a place that can give claustrophobia or repulsion, showing us in frames the incomplete protagonist, in an image that does not give space for all the things to enter and with a dim lighting that makes you empathize with Charlie's depression from minute one. With this, the 1:1 format in which the film is shot is also a success, being used as a resource to narrate a very small story but full of emotion.
De las cosas que más me sorprenden es que, viendo la película ya sabiendo lo que iba a pasar, me di cuenta de la cantidad de cosas que el director quiere mostrar, con una fotografía increíble y con un lugar que puede dar claustrofobia o repelús, mostrándonos en encuadres al protagonista incompleto, en una imagen que no da espacio para que entren todas las cosas y con una iluminación tenue que te hace empatizar con la depresión de Charlie desde el minuto uno. Con esto también es un acierto el formato 1:1 en el que está filmada la película, usándose como recurso para narrar una historia muy pequeña pero llena de emoción.
Finally, being a drama that is based on a play, that takes place in a single location and with less than six characters, you have to "give to Caesar what is Caesar's": the performances of all the cast are on point, perfect and without touching the exaggerated...well, maybe a little yes, but that already by the end when the film is at a cusp of drama in which you can no longer leave, giving us with that also a beautiful and touching ending in the way that I have rarely seen in movies and much less in recent films, being this last scene perfect in every way.
Por último, siendo un drama que es basado en una obra de teatro, que transcurre en una sola locación y con menos de seis personajes, hay que “darle al Cesar lo que es del Cesar”: las actuaciones de todo el reparto están al toque, perfectas y sin tocar lo exagerado…bueno, tal vez un poco sí, pero eso ya por el final cuando la película está en una cúspide de drama en la que ya no puedes salir, dándonos con eso también un final precioso y conmovedor de la forma que pocas veces he visto en películas y mucho menos en películas recientes, siendo esta última escena perfecta en todo sentido.
