Awakening

In the midst of all the misery and hardship produced by the failing of late stage capitalism there are some glimmers of hope for a brighter future. Slowly but surely the old narratives of the capitalist world order are starting to lose their appeal, and the need for an alternative is becoming more apparent. Maybe we're just in time for an awakening...

Throughout history every ruling class had their own legitimizing story. The kings and feudal lords had their "divine right" to rule, granted to them by none other than the Big Man In The Sky Himself. Their ruling power hinged on the masses believing that story of course, which is why the Kings had a partnership with the Clergy. In Church and in the Bible we learned that man is inherently sinful, that he should be content with whatever meager daily bread was granted him, and that he would be rewarded in the Afterlife if he played by the rules set by God's ruler on Earth, the king. The king is appointed by God because he and his bloodline are better than the rest, and we all believed it.

Capitalism's legitimizing story isn't much different. Our rulers, the capitalist billionaires, are in their rightful place because of their merits. Because somehow they're better than the rest of us, they're smarter, or they've worked harder, or their grandparents did. And we all believed that as well. But this narrative of the meritocracy is starting not to work anymore. Our iPhones are full of technologies that have been researched and developed by the state, with our tax-dollars. Google built their riches on the government-funded internet and government-funded satellites. Ideas and the inventions resulting from those ideas come from all of us, not just one individual. Every "new" idea is built on countless previous ideas. What we have in capitalism is simply a system that allows one individual to patent and own those ideas. Google didn't make the internet, Apple didn't invent touch-screens, yet they're allowed to reap the profits from those tax-dollar funded inventions; we get none of that.

I recently stumbled upon the short video linked below; I'd really like you all to take a few minutes to watch it. In it is explained a novel idea, an alternative route to ultimately arrive at a stateless communist society. The basic idea is as simple as it is just; seeing that all big multinationals make profits from publicly funded technologies, they should be mandated to share a significant part of their revenue with the public at large. When you think about it, this proposal is the realization, finally, of the trickle-down economy. Starting at 10 percent, the share of profits trickling down to society could then gradually be increased until it reaches 100 percent. Of course this is but a rough sketch, and this should be expanded upon, for example with a shortening of the work week to reach the dream of 100 percent employability. We all will want to work to contribute to a society that truly works for all of our best interests; no one will want to be useless in that society, that's my honest belief.
