The Socialism Smear

If you're an American voter, you have it so easy to determine what policy proposals are good for you; you just watch the GOP and look for the policies they fight the hardest. Especially the policies they call "socialism" are sure to be the most popular, and most beneficial for regular working class Americans.

You might believe that the above statement is stretching it, that it's a tad exaggerated. It's not though. As a matter of fact, all the most popular policies of today, like medicare, medicaid and, unfortunately, Obamacare, were smeared as "socialism" yesterday by the Grand Old Party. Every time an American politician proposes something that might actually better the lifes of American citizens, usually a Democrat, Republicans will call them a dirty socialist or communist. "Wait, you want to help the working poor? You filthy socialist!" "Do I understand correctly that you want everyone to have healthcare that's free at the point of service, AND detached from their jobs so that they have more freedom to switch to another job? You dirty communist!" "What, you want cheap affordable child care, giving women more freedom on the job-market? You despicable socialist!" "You want the insanely rich and corporations to pay their fair share of taxes? Stalin!!"

It's really pathetic. But what's even more pathetic is the fact that the Democrats are unable to actually realize the good proposals coming from their party. It took only two corporate Democrats, Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, to completely gut Biden's Build Back Better bill, getting rid of its most progressive and most popular provisions like paid family leave, lower prescription drug pricing and free community college. With the Senate split between 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans, and a Republican opposition that's sure to be united as one in these polarized times, it takes only one Democrat vote to put a halt to any progressive policy. Manchin and Sinema have endured a lot of criticism, rightly so, in the public eye for placing their own, and their donators' interests above the interests and well being of their constituents and the world.

Manchin and Sinema have ensured that the US is destined to remain one of seven countries – along with the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea and Tonga – without paid leave for new mothers...

Joe Biden defended his precarious position by saying that with "50 Democrats, every one is president." That's well put. But... Let's not get carried away and focus solely on the dastardly duo. Here's something I've never heard mentioned in the press, but what I know to be true regardless: with the dastardly duo present to point fingers at, many other corporate Democrats have a chance to play make-believe that they're on the side of progressives and of the American people, when they're not. And let's also not forget that this is a problem only because the GOP will ALWAYS vote against policies and proposals that can actually and materially better the lifes of American citizens. Always. They'll latch on to nonsensical fear-mongering about CRT, social justice, stolen elections, Dr. Seuss books, Potato Head's gender, and... socialism. And they are successful with this diversion tactic as well, for in a sane world this party would never be in power. Never.

But then again, in a sane world neither of these parties would even exist. Watch the below linked short video about a Democrat telling the truth about the overused socialism smear, and how Republicans have always stood in the way of progress. What they smeared as "socialism" yesterday are the same popular policies they have to defend today.
