Garden Journal: Crops Update; Trying to Germinate Cassava; Transplanting Mustard and Snow Cabbage Putting Up Fence for my Calamansi

Greetings!

Last week and a couple of days the water has not been very predictable (when it comes to rain in the rain). Last week was raining more and with that rain came some problems for my vegetable garden like the attack of caterpillars and the fast growth of wild grass and weeds on my vegetable garden including in my little Calamansi farm.

Also this past week and the previous days before I wrote this blog I tried to be productive by working hard on my vegetables and it is a good thing that the rain not only brought the caterpillars but also some welcome development some of the Moringa that I planted last month have already germinated.

Aside from the positive development that was brought by the rain here are some of the chores and updates that I have done in the past weeks and past few days on my vegetable garden (in chronological order).

September 7, 2023 - Moringa

It was on September 7 when I noticed that some of my Moringa started to germinate or develop some leaves. To be honest, the ones that I expected to develop new leaves were not the ones that have developed new leaves. Check the photos below.

September 8, 2023 - Green Chili, Tomato, Bottle Gourd, Eggplant

On September 7, I noticed that some of my crops are now starting to flower (Green Chili, Tomato, Bottle Gourd, and Eggplant). when I saw those crops starting to flower they brought a lot of joy to me because they were the ones that were attacked by the caterpillars that were brought by the frequent rain. Check the photos of the flowers below.

September 14, 2023 - Erecting posts for my little Calamansi farm

Was on September 13 when I asked one of my relatives to cut from bamboo to be used as posts on the fence that I am going to build around my little calamansi farm. On the next day, September 14, we erected all the posts when our bare hands since the soil is still soft that has brought by the frequent rains.

September 15, 2023 - Preparing the soil for transplanting Mustard and Snow Cabbage

On September 15, I was finally able to prepare the soil for transplanting my Mustard and Snow Cabbage which was days overdue. Prior to preparing the soil for transplanting, I have to get some soil on a nearby creek about 100+ meters away from our house. I got more than 100 kilos of soil which I transported using my scooter. Prior to getting the soil I also bought some black back to be used as a container for the soil. After filling the bags with soil I still got plenty of soil left that I am going to use on transplanting Mustard and Snow Cabbage on other locations.

September 15, 2023 - Trying to germinate Cassava

On September 15, my wife arrived from my son's school carrying Cassava cuttings. I have been planning to plant some Cassava so I a very happy when I saw what my wife had brought home. I immediately put the Cassava cuttings in a container half-filled with water and waited for the cuttings to germinate.

Then in the afternoon, I secured bamboo posts in place using a huge hammer weighing about 15 kilos. You may notice on the gif below that it looks like I am just toying with the hammer but it is not, you actually get tired with just 3-4 smashes.

September 16, 2023 - Transplanting Mustard and Snow Cabbage

Transplanting Mustard and Snow Cabbage has been long overdue. So overdue that they are now growth stunting. It is a good thing that I was finally able to transplant them after a few days of delay. Check the photos below. I actually did not transplant all my mustard and snow cabbage into a black bag because it consumes a lot of soil. I only transplanted 10 mustard seedlings and 10 snow cabbage seedlings.

September 18, 2023 - Small leaves coming out on the Cassava cuttings

I was surprised by how fast Cassava cutting develops young leaves. I just soaked them in water two days ago and here they are now.
