Greetings!
Since we relocated to our new bamboo house last August 6, 2023, I am planting all that I can for my family's needs and eventually selling some for sustainable income. As of now here are what I already planted: Calamansi (41 seedlings), Strings Beans (the second batch for this year is already germinated), Japanese/Chinese Eggplant, Green Rounded Eggplant, Green Chili, Red Chili, Jute, Sweet Potato Vines, Papaya, and Bottle Gourd.
Later on, I am planning to plant Mustard, Snow Cabbage, Onion, and Garlic.
Sustainability
My ultimate goal why I am on a planting frenzy is food sustainability and financial stability. Those two are the ultimate goal since I am now retired from being an I.T. professional for two years already. The last time that I reported to the office is July 3, 2021.
August 10, 2023 - Planting string beans seeds
With that being said, on August 10, I planted a second batch of string beans for this year since the first batch is beginning to show signs of withering. Also, as of now, I am only planting for my family's needs while I am figuring out the best strategy for planting vegetables to be sold for my family's financial stability.
Here's a gif of me while I am doing the finishing touches of planting the second batch of string beans seeds
August 14, 2023 - The string beans have germinated
Four days later the string beans that I planted have germinated. They will replace the first batch of string beans that I planted months ago. It always makes me happy whenever I see the seed that I planted start to germinate.
Here is a collage of the string beans that germinated
August 12, 2023 - Bought some tomato seedlings from the market
While I am staring at the crops that I planted one afternoon I realized that I do not have tomatoes yet, so when I got the chance to get to the market I bought ten pieces of tomato seedlings that I will be transplanting into my vegetable garden. It is a good thing that there are now lots of stores selling vegetable seedlings for quick growing. But I do have a plant to grow my own seedlings.
Here is the photo of the tomato seedlings that I bought
August 14, 2023 - Planting the tomato seedlings
Two days after I bought the tomato seedlings I transplanted them in my vegetable garden. First, I tilled the soil.
After I tilled the soil I removed some of them using a shovel.
And then I put some brown soil that I got from a nearby river.
Then I transplanted the tomato seedlings.
Then I put some stakes around them to protect them from our dogs (who casually run over any vegetable in their path when they are playing with each other.
August 14, 2023 - Planting some wild Bitter Gourd seeds
One of the good things that I love here in our town is the abundance of wild vegetable that grows almost everywhere near rivers. One good example is Bitter Gourd. So, when I saw one of my relatives that has a ripe wild bitter gourd fruit in his backyard I asked for some ripe fruit then I got their seeds for planting in my vegetable garden.
Wild Bitter Gourd Seeds
It is a good thing that I still have a soil-less medium from last year which I am going to use to germinate the seeds.
Soil-less medium for seed raising
I also got some tray from last year
I put the soil-less medium on the tray that I am going to use to germinate the seeds
Then I put the seeds on the tray one by one.
August 15, 2023 - Growing my tomato seedlings
And just today, I decided to grow my own tomato seedlings from a tomato that my wife brought from the school garden.
I just squeezed the tomato on top of a wet soil
Put some soil on top to cover the seeds.
Then water the topsoil.
August 15, 2023 - Drying up some chili for seeds
And last but not least I also decided to grow my own chili seedlings on the chili that my wife brought from the school garden. I am first going to sun-dry these chilis (photo below) then harvest the seeds.
That is all for now guys, catch you up with the next one. Wishing you all safety, good health, and abundance.
