It's already October. In Germany, the temperatures have been fluctuating, with some days being below 20°C and others exceeding 25°C. We seem to be oscillating between summer and autumn. However, with the sun rising after 7 am, the growth of plants on my balcony has slowed down, making it feel like autumn.
This morning, when I stepped out onto the balcony, I noticed that the pods of my scarlet runner beans had dried out. Upon opening them, I found beautifully formed seeds inside. Today, I harvested four seeds for next year. It's like having good plant friend.
This week, I planted flower bulbs in some large pots and sowed autumn/winter leafy greens on top. Planting these bulbs feels like an investment for the next spring.
To my delight, I found Japanese (or Asian?) iris bulbs being sold at a nearby home center, and at the incredible price of 1.59 euros for 20 bulbs! I promptly purchased them and plan to gift some to a gardening-enthusiastic German-Japanese family I'm visiting tomorrow with my daughter.
As work on the balcony has lessened, I've started tending to my indoor plants. I repotted my Pachira into a larger pot and potted Monstera cuttings. Indoor plants are indispensable during the cold, dark, and rainy German autumn and winter. I also plan to move the dracaena, which my daughter has taken a liking to, into a bigger pot.
For my balcony garden tasks, all that remains is to keep an eye on the tomatoes that are still fruiting. After that, I'll finish planting the rest of the bulbs and then bring in any non-hardy trees and perennials inside for the winter.
Only a bit of gardening remains for this year, so let's enjoy it!
今日から10月ですね！ドイツは20度以下の日があったり、25度を超える日があったりで、夏と秋の間を行ったり来たりしています。ただ、7時過ぎに日が上り、バルコニーの植物の成長は遅く、秋を実感します。
今朝明るくなってバルコニーに出ると、紅花インゲン豆のさやが乾燥していました。さやを開けてみるときれいな種が出てきました。今日は4つ種がとれました。こうして毎年種とりをして、毎年まいているうちの定番の植物です。仲のよい友達ができるみたいで、長らく醍醐味をする喜びの一つです。
今週は鉢の一部に球根を植えて、その上から秋冬の葉物の種をまきました。球根を植えるのは、翌年の春に向けた投資のようです。近所のホームセンターでなんとあやめの球根を売っていて、さらに20個1.59ユーロ（250円ほど）と格安だったので大喜びで買ってきました。明日はガーデニング好きの日独家族を訪ねるのでお土産に持っていくつもりです。
バルコニーでの作業が減ってきたこともあり、観葉植物の手入れを少しずつ進めています。家の中で育てているパキラを大きな鉢に植え替えて、モンステラの挿木を鉢植えにしました。観葉植物は寒くて暗くて雨降りのドイツの秋冬には欠かせません（と少なくとも私は思います）。あとは、子供が気に入って彼女のスペースに置いているドラセナも大きな鉢に移したいです。
バルコニーの庭仕事は、まだちょこちょこ実をつけているトマトたちをもう少し見守って、そのあと球根の植え付けを終わらせて、果樹など耐寒性のない木や多年草を家の中に取り込んだら完了といったところです。
今年の庭仕事もあとちょっと、楽しみましょう！
