Oprah Winfrey was born on 1954-January-29 in Kosciusko, Mississippi, US.
She is best known as a television personality, actress, and entrepreneur.. At 19 she became a news anchor for a local CBS television station. In 1976 she became a news reporter and co-anchor at the ABC news affiliate in Baltimore, Maryland, US.
In 1977-- still at ABC in Baltimore-- she found herself restricted by the objectivity expected of a news reporter. That's when she made the switch to talk show programming when she co-hosted People Are Talking. With her new-found comfort as a talk show host, she became a success in the new-for-her format.
In 1984 she went to Chicago to host the low-rated program AM Chicago. Thanks to her engaging personality the show went from also-ran to immediate success tothe point where it was renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show. Her show was such a hit that it was syndicated and in 1986 became the highest rated television talk show in the US.
