Index4INDEX Card 237: Nadia Comăneci 1

I don't run away from a challenge because I am afraid. Instead, I run toward it because the only way to escape fear is to trample it beneath your feet.

About the Quote

Even top-league professional athletes get nervous before major events. Sometimes they are nervous because of all the events surrounding the event and can't wait for the event to begin. Sometimes they are nervouce because they have no idea what to expect. In some cases, they are nervous because they aren't confident in their preparation. There are many reasonsfor even these athletes to be nervous, but they face the challenges anyway. If they don't face them, they may as well forfeit. It's similar for people who are about to get married, or to armed forces units about to enter into a battle or other military engagement.

One concrete example of this is the polce officers and firefighters who went into the World Trade Center on 2001-Spetember-11 even as the buildings were close to collapse. As scared as they were, they went in while everyone else went out because they knew that was what they had to do. In what was the scariest moment of their lives (especially with the death toll among their own comrades), those who survived faced their fears, conquered them, and put it behind them long enough to save as many people as they could. Had these people not faced their fears, the death toll that day would have been even higher.

When faced with a great challenge, the best thing to do is to meet it head-on and just get it over with. At worst, we fail. At best, we succeed and gain the knowlwdge that we can handle such situations.
