About the Quote

Things which enjoy majority support of the people began with one person or a few people:

  • For almost three centuries, Christianity was considered a cult religion until Roman Emperor Constantine had his religious experience and made Christianity the official religion of Rome
  • In its earliest days, Islam was known to a handful of people besides The Prophet; within one century it was on the verge of dominating Western Europe and displacing Christendom.
  • During the American Revolution, more people were neutral or loyalists of the British Empire than in favor of American Independence.
  • In 1917, Marxists led by Vladimir Lenin were small in number yet changed the course of history-- to this day-- when they replaced the Russian Empire with the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (the USSR).

This tendency for mainstream to come out of humble (or eccentric) beginnings can also be seen in the advance of technology:

  • Personal computers (not simply PCs made by IBM or compatible with them) were playthings until Stephen Wozniak and Steve Jobs made the first Apple I computer in the Jobs' family garage; we know how that turned out.
  • The World Wide Web was initially limited to academic institutions exchanging research with each other; now it's an economic juggernaut thanks to companies such as Amazon and Google. * Cryptocurrency was a curiosity from the day Satoshi Nakamoto brought the Bitcoin network online though at least 2015;the rest is history.
