Territorio de Zaguates "Land of The Strays"

This area in Costa Rica has taken what we are trying to do to a completely higher level. Unfortunately, it also appears that they should have been practicing some level of triage and now it appears as though they have indeed bitten off more than they can chew. They, like us, are constantly on the verge of running out of funds and since they house such a massive amount of animals, the lack of funds can be far more devastating than it would be for us.

Lya Battle and her husband Alvaro Saumet founded this bastion of doggie goodwill 16 years ago and like most animal welfare projects, it started out with just a few pups. It has grown to nearly 1,000 animals, mostly dogs, but cats as well.

The amount of animals that are contained here normally invites accusations of them not sterilizing their animals and at first glance I thought the same thing but the fact of the matter is that every incoming animal is spay or neutered before they join the pack. At least that is what the website and mission statement say. It would quickly become an uncontrollable population if this was not happening.

This place operates with volunteers and also a few paid staff but much like Krabi Animal Welfare this operation is a non-profit organization.

While this doesn't have anything directly to do with Krabi Animal Welfare the reason why I am sharing it is because it is a real inspiration to see people doing so much. This is what I would eventually like to see Krabi Animal Welfare turn into. We have a long way to go though. One thing worth noting is that if and when Territorio de Zaguates has funding issues it could end up being a far more serious event than if we were in the same boat. They have 900 mouths to feed every day. I'm glad I don't have to deal with that level of stress :)
