The ICHNEUMON WASP is a type of parasitic yet useful wasp of more than 40,000 species. It is known as parasitic because it usually propergates by laying an egg on or in the larva of another insect or a spider.
The strange looking almost frightening species of the insect family, has more than 3000 true species of wasp in North America.
This Ichneumon wasp vary in size of about 0.3-5 centimeters long, their abdomen is larger than their head and thorax together.
The Ichneumon wasp had longer antennae.
The most distinguishing feature of Ichneumon wasp is the needle like tube at the end of abdomen, called ovipositor. This ovipositor is no thicker than a horse hair.
The ovipositor helps to squeeze the egg down the tube.
Other insects or spider lays their egg[Larva] 2 centimeters below the earth, but the female Ichneumon called Megahysea wasp a genius detects the location of the larva by tapping a tree with her antennae to pick up the larva below 2 centimeters or more under the tree. Once she senses there is a larva below, she intensifies the tapping. Eventually she begins to probe into the bark with the tube as if drilling it, once the ovipositor touches the larva, the egg of the Megahyssa wasp is squeezed down the ovipositor tube. They lay their egg on top or beside the host larva, it feeds on the host larva fluids. The wasp develops in time, when it reaches the surface of the tree, another generation of ruthless parasites which serves an important purpose.
The lavae feeds on insects that are harmful to food crops, including chinch bugs, boll weevils, codling moth, asparagus beetles.
Ichneumon evidently control the prolifration of agricultural produce.
Ichneumon wasp are very numerous but they are seldome seen by people because they lay eggs, breed and feed inhabitants seldom visited by humans. Ichneumon wasp serves as another example of diversity and balance in living things that man has yet to comprehend fully.
