We Are Alive! August 7th, 2023 Groceries and Gleaning

We visited the grocery store and took my youngest with me. He was happy in the car, but unhappy as soon as the car stopped. He cheered up again when we visited the store.

Coffee

I"m always looking for those "good deals" to maximize our food budget.

I found 12 oz ground coffee for $2.00 which is an astounding price per oz for coffee. That's $0.165 per oz. Premium coffee is usually between $0.40 - $0.50 per oz, while "cheap" coffee is usually $0.25 - $0.30 / oz. I tried the coffee this morning and it was YUMMY!

It is a blessing for us to enjoy premium coffee without breaking the bank. Better than Starbucks, where the cheapest thing on the menu is still over $2.

Butter

Even though food prices are going up, sometimes we can still find outstanding discounts on quality food. Our family enjoys REAL butter (no margarine for us) but dairy products have become very expensive. For a while, we could not get a pound of butter for under $4.00

Today, I saw something I don't think I've EVER seen, since monitoring food prices. IF we can find butter for under $3.00 /lb we get very excited and usually stock up. A few years back we bought 12lbs of butter for $2.50 /b. It was $30, but saved us money in the long run. We didn't buy butter for months and months.

I found butter on sale for $1.50 /lb. Unheard of. When it says "Save $4.99 each" they're not kidding, butter is usually $6.50 /lb.

This time, when I loaded 12 lbs of butter at the register, it was only $18.00. Hmmm, maybe I should get some more!

I may experiment with making ghee (clarified butter) and canning it for long-term (non freezer) preservation. I don't know if we'll ever see butter for $1.50 again!

As a daddy, supplying our family with quality food is important. Supplying quality food that we otherwise could not afford is a huge bonus for us. Even now, with prices going up, we can still find excellent "deals" on food, so we can enjoy things like premium coffee and real butter, without breaking our budget.

Thoughts on Gleaning

Opportunities are out there, it's just a matter of discovering and leveraging them - not to take advantage, but to gain advantage while helping others, blessing vendors with additional commerce instead of additional trash.

So many food items and valuables are thrown away and wasted, either because of laziness or because of economy. But these food and valuables are not to be thrown away, but intentionally left for people to enjoy. In the bible, the command is to "leave them".

“When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, neither shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the Lord your God. Leviticus 19:9-10

I consider myself and my family among the "sojourners" mentioned here. We are in the world, but not of the world. We are passing through this land, waiting for the Reign of God.

It's important to work, earn and eat. But also to enjoy what is remaining, the fallen grapes and the gleanings of the harvest. As sojourners in the land, we are looking forward to that city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

Can you think of any opportunities where you've enjoyed "the leavings"?

Teach Your Children Liberty from Sin

We encourage parents to teach their children principles of Godliness, beginning with the Word and an understanding who God is and what His Son has done to form a relationship with us.

No one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, his workmanship will be evident, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will prove the quality of each man’s work. 1 Corinthians 3:11-13

Teach Your children Liberty from Tyranny

Second to this is the principle of self-determination and freedom, lest we loose the ability to teach our children the first principle in future generations.

Our children read the Tuttle Twin books, specifically to learn libertarian principles, which most people learn later in life. These books are useful for our family, and yours, to teach children concepts that seem complicated, but are made simple in these books. I am an affiliate for Libertas Publishing, your purchase will help our family grow financially.
