Nativity à la Spanish artists - sand sculpture

Spain and Catalonia have had some amazing artists over the years. Always pushing the envelope in what looks cool and interesting. I really like the work of Salvador Dalí. Even though he is credited as being one of the fathers of surrealism to me his work is so designed and contrived I'm not sure if I accept it as surreal There you go, I'm an art critic now.

Another nativity, this time from La Pineda, Catalonia. My images from this project were quite disappointing because I never got the lighting I needed for good photos.

As a theme for this year's sculpture, we decided we would try and make it in the style of the Spanish empire's artists. For me there was only one choice, I wanted to pay homage to Salvador.

Dilly Dalí

My main theme was the three kings so I had to think how would the man himself represent them. Dalí loved to make things that looked like one thing but were actually something else. His long stilted figures and desert landscapes were a big inspiration and so with all these elements I concocted a design from my surrealist little head.

The three kings were walking in a line over the sand dunes and their combined shadow stretched away to form the shadow of a camel.

That's pretty much all she wrote. As a detail to sell the idea that it was a desert and to give a little bit of interest to the massive surface I needed for the ground plain I added some Sailing stones. Yes, that's a thing, a mystery of rocks that appear to move across Death Valley. Scientists believe the phenomenon is caused by freezing and thawing. making the rock move imperceptibly while leaving a track in their wake.

Although my lack of images may leave you underwhelmed I really think Salvador would have wiggled his little moustache in approval.

Thanks for reading. I use Steem to document my work as an ephemeral Sculptor of sand, snow and ice, amongst other things. This will hopefully give it a new life on the Steem Blockchain. Below you will find some of my recent posts.
