Hunting Midnight Episode 1: The Ghost in the Clock. Book Review

What to expect:

This is a tale of the paranormal. There's an evil clock in it!

Is this a story that's going to give you nightmares because of graphic descriptions of gore or violence? No. Much like other fine writers, the author chose to make us care what happens next, rather than going for a "cheap pop".

But I can guarantee that you won't leave bored. @jfuji does an excellent job of giving us plenty of action, while building suspense. Along the way, he drops subtle clues about upcoming riddles.

The characters

Mixed into this spooky mystery are some very quirky, funny, brave, yet believable characters.

They don't distract the reader from the paranormal aspect of the story. In fact, they make it more believable, while adding yet another layer to an already fascinating tale.

Alena Bisk:

Don't let her initial reluctance to get caught up in things fool you. This lady is smart, tough, loyal, and as tenacious as they come!

At first she might appear to be somewhat timid. But when the chips are down, she may very well be the bravest person around.

Deluxe Prime:

Definitely the most interesting and fun person I've had the pleasure of "meeting" in a long time. I instantly connected with her, due to her love of animals, and interest in science.

I'm also eager to learn more about her. Why does she name at least twenty pets Lobster? What is the story about her unique name? And how does she find time to try to save the city while taking care of twenty pets?!?!

Dack:

We haven't heard too much about him yet. But he was brave enough to want to help out, even though he was obviously freaked by certain events. And he likes Deluxe!

Fergus:

Potential love interest for Alena? He definitely seems more reluctant to put himself in harm's way than his friend Dack.

But perhaps like Alena, he might have some hidden bravery? I don't know, because we haven't gotten very far into the book yet.

Willy:

I don't know much about his personality, but he's definitely mysterious! And Wi-Fi does weird things whenever he's around...

Persi:

Also mysterious. Is she alive, dead, or somewhere in between?

Eden:

The evil clock (or spirit trapped in a clock, perhaps?). What can I say about it? It's definitely not the most intelligent villain of all time.

But it's definitely evil. It wants to kill living things, both humans and animals. And it's determined to free itself. Letting it get loose can't be a good idea!

Get rewarded for enjoying a good read:

That's right! The author rewards readers regularly with prizes, as an incentive for you to provide honest feedback.

He's not after glowing reviews, but your actual opinion. Tell him what you loved and hated. What was your favorite quote? Do you think the characters should have done something else?

Will I enjoy reading this?

I know I'm enjoying it! While I like ghost stories, I know that not everyone does.

Even if you normally don't like anything spooky, you'll end up being pulled into Alena's world despite yourself. Without slowing the pace of the main story, @jfuji has managed to add humor and a realistic feel to his work.
