Hey guys! I thought about it for a long time, but after extensive research I decided to visit one of the most dangerous cities in the world. According to Wikipedia, Acapulco is currently the second most dangerous city in the world. Nevertheless, every weekend countless Mexicans spend wonderful days on the city's beautiful beaches. But is that even possible without danger, and what safety measures should you take when spending a beach holiday in Acapulco? In this article you will find my answers to exactly these questions.
Hallo Leute! Ich habe lange überlegt, aber mich nach ausführlicher Recherche dazu durchgerungen, eine der gefährlichsten Städte der Welt zu besuchen. Laut Wikipedia ist Acapulco aktuell die zweitgefährlichste Stadt der Welt. Trotzdem verbringen hier jedes Wochenende unzählige Mexikaner traumhafte Tage an den wunderschönen Stränden der Stadt. Aber ist das überhaupt gefahrlos möglich und welche Sicherheitsmaßnahmen sollte man beachten, wenn man einen Strandurlaub in Acapulco verbringt? In diesem Artikel findet ihr meine Antworten auf genau diese Fragen.
984 - that's how many homicides happened in Acapulco in 2018 and therefore 111 per 100,000 inhabitants. It is only logical that numbers like these scare off international tourists and so the former tourism hotspot is now avoided by most travelers. Other cities like Cancun became more popular beach destinations in the meantime. However, if you talk to the Mexican population, you get a different view. Acapulco suffers above all from its bad reputation, but the overcrowded and overpriced Cancun has meanwhile become more dangerous than the metropolis on Mexico's west coast. In fact, there is no other beach destination that can be reached as quickly and easily from the capital without a flight as Acapulco and that is the reason why so many residents of Mexico City spend their holidays there. The violence and crime mainly takes place between the individual gangs and not in the tourist districts. This all sounded very logical to me and so I started the five-hour bus ride from CDMX to the well-known coastal city in the state of Guerrero.

Dass Zahlen wie diese internationale Touristen abschrecken ist nur logisch und somit wird der einstige Tourismus-Hotspot heute von den meisten Reisenden gemieden. Längst haben sich andere Städte wie Cancun zu den beliebteren Strand-Destinationen entwickelt. Wenn man mit der mexikanischen Bevölkerung spricht, zeigt sich aber ein anderes Bild. Acapulco leide vor allem unter seiner schlechten Reputation, das überlaufene und überteuerte Cancun sei aber inzwischen längst gefährlicher, als die Metropole an der mexikansichen Westküste. Tatsächlich gibt es keine andere Strand-Destination, die so schnell und einfach ohne Flug von der Hauptstadt erreichbar ist, wie Acapulco und deshalb verbringen so viele Bewohner von Mexiko City hier ihre Urlaube. Die Gewalt und Kriminalität findet dabei hauptsächlich zwischen den einzelnen Banden und nicht in den touristischen Stadtteilen statt. Das klang alles sehr logisch für mich und so begab ich mich auf die fünfstündige Busfahrt von CDMX an die berühmt berüchtigte Küstenstadt im Bundesstaat Guerrero.
In order not to risk my safety, I booked one of the most popular five-star hotels right in the middle of the tourist zone and directly on the main beach of the city. I wanted to spend the days in the beach and pool area of the hotel and only leave the complex for breakfast or dinner, but even then only stay on the main tourist mile. That was the plan. Already during the last few kilometres of the bus ride I got a bad feeling. I arrived at 9.30 pm. At that time, the city seemed extremely dark and deserted. You could hardly see anyone on the street and somehow all the shops and restaurants seemed to be closed. After arriving, I got the next bad message on my phone screen: Uber does not work in Acapulco and so I had to trust one of the pushy taxi drivers at the bus station, who brought me safely and cheaply to the hotel though.
Um meine Sicherheit nicht zu gefährden, buchte ich eines der beliebtesten Fünf-Sterne-Hotels direkt in mitten der touristischen Zone und direkt am Hauptstrand der Stadt. Ich wollte die Tage im Strand- und Pool-Bereich des Hotels verbringen und die Anlage nur für das Frühstück oder Abendessen verlassen, mich aber selbst dann nur auf der Haupt-Touristenmeile aufhalten. Das war der Plan. Bereits bei den letzen Kilometern der Busfahrt bekam ich ein ungutes Gefühl. Ich kam um 21.30 Uhr an. Zu dieser Zeit wirkte die Stadt extrem dunkel und verlassen. Man sah kaum einen Menschen auf der Straße und irgendwie schienen auch so gut wie alle Geschäfte und Restaurants geschlossen zu haben. Nach der Ankunft gab es gleich den nächsten Schock für mich: Uber funktioniert in Acapulco nicht und so musste ich mich einem der aufdringlichen Taxifahrer am Busbahnhof anvertrauen, der mich aber schließlich sicher und günstig zum Hotel brachte.
To say it right away - that was already the only situation in which I didn't feel totally safe and comfortable during my whole stay. The next morning, I really started to enjoy Acapulco. The hotel was in need of some renovation, but otherwise very beautiful and well-maintained, the beach was sandy and the water crystal clear. I loved relaxing under palm trees by the pool, walking along the beach and the promenade and experiencing the wonderful views and the tropical climate.
Um es gleich vorwegzunehmen - das war auch bereits die einzige Situation, in der ich mich nicht wirklich sicher und wohl fühlte während meines Aufenthalts. Ab dem nächsten morgen begann ich Acapulco wirklich zu genießen. Das Hotel war zwar etwas renovierungsbedürftig, aber sonst sehr schön und gepflegt, der Strand war feinsandig und das Meerwasser glasklar. Ich liebte es, unter Palmen am Pool zu entspannen, den Strand und die Flaniermeile entlangzuspazieren und die herrlichen Ausblicke sowie das tropische Klima auf mich wirken zu lassen.
Two things struck me as particularly positive about Acapulco: Firstly, the people are on average a lot friendlier than in Mexico City and secondly, the food is simply excellent everywhere you go. At least I only had good experiences and tried some Mexican specialities again. Unfortunately I have already forgotten the names of the dishes. There was also a particularly crazy drink on my menu. It was beer with tamarind juice. The rim of the glass was coated with a sweet sauce and a spicy powder. There was also a stick made of a kind of tamarind paste with chili, with which you could stir the whole thing. It was really a unique taste experience.
Zwei Dinge fielen mir besonders positiv an Acapulco auf: Zum einen sind die Leute im Durchschnitt um einiges freundlicher, als in Mexico City und zum anderen ist das Essen einfach überall hervorragend, egal wohin man geht. Zumindest machte ich nur gute Erfahrungen und probierte wieder so einige mexikanische Spezialitäten. Die Namen der Gerichte habe ich allerdings schon wieder vergessen. Auch ein besonders verrücktes Getränk stand auf meiner Speisekarte. Es handelte sich um Bier mit Tamarindensaft. Das Glas war dabei am Rand mit einer süßen Soße und einem würzigen Pulver bestrichen. Dazu gab es noch einen Stab aus einer Art Tamarinden-Paste mit Chili, mit dem man das Ganze verrühren konnte. Es war wirklich ein einzigartiges Geschmackserlebnis.
The sunsets in Acapulco are highlights as well. The evening atmosphere on the beach was very peaceful and happy. However, during the evening walk on the beach I noticed that there are almost no foreign tourists. Also the promenade is very busy on weekend evenings. The many colorfully illuminated carriages pulled by quads are particularly eye-catching here. These are of course especially popular with children and must be some kind of special attraction of the city. In any case, I felt safe even after sunset, but also never moved more than 100m away from the hotel.
Auch die Sonnenuntergänge in Acapulco sind ein absolutes Highlight. Die abendliche Atmosphäre am Strand war sehr friedlich und fröhlich. Allerdings fiel mir beim abendlichen Strandspaziergang erst so richtig auf, dass man so gut wie keine ausländischen Touristen antrifft. Auch die Flaniermeile ist an Wochenendabenden sehr belebt. Auffällig sind hier vor allem die vielen bunt leuchtenden Kutschen, die von Quads gezogen werden. Diese sind natürlich besonders bei Kindern beliebt und müssen wohl eine Art besondere Attraktion der Stadt sein. Ich fühlte mich jedenfalls auch nach Sonnenuntergang sicher, entfernte mich aber auch nie mehr als 100m vom Hotel.
Overall, I really enjoyed my beach weekend in Acapulco and I would say that I took the right measures to ensure maximum safety during my stay. You could probably explore other areas of the city safely, but if you want to take absolutely no risks, just do as I did and spend your time on the beach, in a safe hotel and in the heart of the tourist zone. By the way, Acapulco is also particularly cheap at the moment, not least because of its bad reputation. I would go back there for a beach weekend anytime I travel to Mexico City, and I sincerely hope that someday the city will return to its golden era and once again be known as a dream vacation destination instead of a dangerous crime hotspot.
Im Großen und Ganzen hat mir mein Strand-Wochenende in Acapulco sehr gut gefallen und ich würde behaupten, dass ich die richtigen Maßnahmen getroffen habe, um dabei für maximale Sicherheit zu sorgen. Wahrscheinlich könnte man auch noch andere Bereiche der Stadt gefahrlos erkunden, doch wenn ihr absolut kein Risiko eingehen wollt, dann macht es einfach so wie ich und verbringt eure Zeit am Strand, in einem sicheren Hotel und im Herzen der touristischen Zone. Übrigens: Acapulco ist nicht zuletzt wegen seiner schlechten Reputation zur Zeit auch besonders preiswert. Ich würde jederzeit wieder für ein Strand-Wochenende zurückkehren, wenn ich nach Mexico City reise und ich hoffe sehr, dass die Stadt irgendwann an ihre goldene Ära anknüpfen kann und wieder als traumhafte Urlaubsdestination statt als gefährlicher Kriminalitäts-Hotspot bekannt sein wird.
