Hey guys! My girlfriend and I were in Iceland for a few days last week and experienced the full harshness of the Icelandic winter. Due to a snowstorm, our return flight was delayed by almost a whole day. But today I would like to tell you about the reason for our trip. We wanted to see the Northern Lights for the first time in our lives and booked a tour for our first day. Just read on if you want to know how successful we were.
Hallo Leute! Meine Freundin und ich waren letzte Woche ein paar Tage in Island und bekamen dabei die volle Härte des isländischen Winters zu spüren. Aufgrund eines Schneesturms verzögerte sich unser Rückflug um fast einen ganzen Tag. Heute möchte ich euch aber vom Grund unserer Reise berichten. Wir wollten nämlich zum ersten Mal in unserem Leben die Nordlichter sehen und buchten eine entsprechende Tour gleich für unseren ersten Tag. Lest einfach weiter, wenn ihr wissen wollt, wie erfolgreich wir dabei waren.
When I looked at the weather forecast, I wasn't sure whether our tour would even start. In the end, however, we were picked up by our tour guide in the minibus at around 9 pm and tried our luck. After half an hour, we reached the first vantage point and actually saw an opening between the dense clouds that would have made it possible to see the Northern Lights. Unfortunately, they didn't appear while we were freezing in the icy wind. The wind was really unbearable and I found it very difficult to take photos. I must therefore apologise for the poor quality of many shots.
Als ich die Wettervorhersage sah, war ich mir gar nicht sicher, ob unsere Tour überhaupt starten würde. Schließlich wurden wir aber doch um ca. 21 Uhr von unserem Tourguide in einem Kleinbus abgeholt und versuchten unser Glück. Nach einer halben Stunde erreichten wir auch schon den ersten Aussichtspunkt und sahen wirklich eine Öffnung zwischen den dichten Wolken, was es grundsätzlich ermöglicht hätte, Nordlichter zu sehen. Leider tauchten sie aber nicht auf, während wir im eisigen Wind frierten. Der Wind war wirklich kaum auszuhalten und das Fotografieren fiel mir sehr schwer. Ich muss mich deshalb auch schon mal für die schlechte Qualität vieler Aufnahmen entschuldigen.
We now made our way through heavy snowfall to the next viewpoint, where conditions were even worse. Our tour guide could only tempt us out of the bus with hot chocolate and cinnamon buns. However, we couldn't hold out for long and returned to the heated interior of the bus. The group actually agreed that we wouldn't see any Northern Lights, but our tour guide persisted and never got tired of giving us hope. After half an hour, we were able to see a few fine, green northern lights in photos, but unfortunately not with the naked eye.
Nun ging es durch dichten Schneefall zum nächsten Aussichtspunkt, an dem noch schlechtere Bedingungen herrschten. Unser Tourguide konnte uns nur mit heißer Schokolade und Zimtschnecken aus dem Bus locken. Lange hielten wir es aber nicht aus und suchten wieder den beheizten Innenraum des Busses auf. Die Gruppe war sich eigentlich einig, dass wir keine Nordlichter sehen würden, doch unser Tourguide blieb hartnäckig und wurde nicht müde, uns Hoffnung zu machen. Nach einer halben Stunde konnte man auf Fotos ein paar feine, grüne Nordlichter sehen, leider jedoch nicht mit freiem Auge.
After about an hour, when even the fine green stripes in the photos had disappeared and we had already given up all hope, the time had really come. A beautiful northern light was clearly visible in the sky above and in front of us. We could hardly believe our eyes. Still, we couldn't really enjoy the sight. You can't see in the pictures how incredibly strong the icy wind and the snow whipped into our faces. We stayed outside for as long as we could stand it and were still happy that we got to see the Northern Lights at all.
Nach ungefähr einer Stunde, als selbst die feinen grünen Streifen in den Fotos verschwunden waren und wir bereits jegliche Hoffnung aufgegeben hatten, war es dann aber wirklich soweit. Ein wunderschönes Nordlicht war klar am Himmel über und vor uns zu erkennen. Wir konnten unseren Augen kaum trauen. Wirklich genießen konnten wir den Anblick aber nicht. Man kann auf den Bildern nämlich nicht erkennen, wie unglaublich stark der eisige Wind uns den Schnee ins Gesicht peitschte. Wir blieben so lange wir es aushielten draußen und waren trotz allem glücklich, dass wir überhaupt noch Nordlichter zu Gesicht bekamen.
What a crazy experience! I hadn't imagined it would be like this. Seeing the Northern Lights during a snowstorm is not a pleasant experience. Nevertheless, we will never forget this adventure. We are just happy that we were able to see this unique natural spectacle with our own eyes.
Was für ein verrücktes Erlebnis! So hatte ich mir das gar nicht vorgestellt. Die Nordlichter während eines Schneesturms zu sehen, ist keine angenehme Erfahrung. Trotzdem werden wir dieses Erlebnis nie vergessen. Wir sind einfach nur glücklich, dass wir dieses einzigartige Naturschauspiel mit unseren eigenen Augen sehen konnten.
