Hello friends! I'm so happy that my posts about Mexico City are so well received by you - that makes blogging even more fun for me! Today, I would like to introduce you to another district of this versatile metropolis. Polanco is more or less the upper class quarter of CDMX. Here you can find lots of classy villas, luxurious shops and fancy restaurants. But there is also a lot to admire in terms of art and architecture. Just read on if you want to know my personal impressions of Polanco.
Hallo Freunde! Es freut mich mega, dass meine Beiträge über Mexico City so gut bei euch ankommen - da macht das Bloggen gleich umso mehr Spaß! Heute möchte ich euch ein weiteres Viertel dieser vielseitigen Metropole vorstellen. Polanco ist quasi der Stadtteil für die Oberschicht von CDMX. Hier findet man jede Menge nobler Villen, luxuriöser Geschäfte und schicker Restaurants. Doch auch was Kunst und Architektur angeht, gibt es einiges zu bestaunen. Lest einfach weiter, wenn ihr wissen wollt, was meine persönlichen Eindrücke von Polanco sind.
The landmark and by far the most unique building of Polanco is the breathtaking Museo Soumaya, which opened in 2011. The construction cost no less than 34 million dollars. I love the organic shape and the scale-like façade of the building, which consists of countless metal hexagons. Upon arrival, however, I immediately experienced a shock. A guard armed with a machine gun approached me and told me with a serious face that the building was not to be photographed. How I would have loved to set up my tripod and camera here in the evening, but at least I took the shots above secretly for you, to show you this architectural masterpiece.
Das Wahrzeichen und mit Abstand einzigartigste Bauwerk von Polanco ist das atemberaubende Museo Soumaya, das im Jahr 2011 eröffnet wurde. Der Bau kostete nicht weniger als 34 Millionen Dollar. Ich liebe die organische Form und die schuppenartige Fassade des Gebäudes, die aus unzähligen metallnen Sechsecken besteht. Bei meiner Ankunft erlebte ich jedoch gleich einen Schock. Ein mit Maschinengewehr bewaffneter Wachmann kam auf mich zu und vermittelte mir mit ernster Mine, dass das Gebäude nicht fotografiert werden darf. Wie gerne hätte ich hier abends mein Stativ und meine Kamera aufgebaut, doch zumindest habe ich heimlich die obigen Fotos für euch gemacht, um euch dieses architektonische Meisterwerk zu zeigen.
Just a few steps away from the Museo Soumaya you can find the artwork "Pérgola Ixca Cienfuegos". It is a series of colorfully painted metal arches that form a long walkway. To my surprise, I found hardly any tourists or people in general here, although the monument is perfectly suited for portrait photography and would definitely pimp an Insta account or two.Unfortunately, I didn't have a model with me, so I just took a selfie ;-)
Nur wenige Schritte vom Museo Soumaya entfernt befindet sich das Kunstwerk "Pérgola Ixca Cienfuegos". Es handelt sich dabei um eine Reihe von bunt bemalten Metallbögen, die einen langen Gang bilden. Zu meiner Überraschung fand ich hier kaum Touristen oder Leute im Allgemeinen, obwohl sich das Monument perfekt für die Porträt-Fotografie eignet und sich damit der ein oder andere Insta-Account aufpimpen lassen würde. Leider hatte ich kein Model dabei, somit wurde es nur ein Selfie ;-)
I continued on through noble, well-kept residential streets and past the luxury shopping mall "El Palacio Hierro" to the main promenade of Polanco called "Avenida Presidente Masaryk". This is known as the most expensive shopping mile in Latin America. Here you can find everything from Gucci and Dior to Prada, which is chic and expensive. However, I personally found the street a bit characterless and uninviting.
Weiter ging es für mich, durch noble, gepflegte Wohnstrassen und vorbei an der Luxus-Shoppingmall "El Palacio Hierro" bis hin zur Hauptflaniermeile von Polanco namens "Avenida Presidente Masaryk". Diese ist als die teuerste Einkaufsmeile Lateinamerikas bekannt. Hier findet man, von Gucci über Dior bis hin zu Prada, alles was schick und teuer ist. Auf mich persönlich wirkte die Straße ehrlich gesagt jedoch etwas charakterlos und unbelebt.
Not uninviting at all, on the other hand, are the numerous side streets of the boulevard, where you can find probably the most expensive restaurants in town. This is where Mexico City's high society hangs out. After a few steps through these side streets, you can reach the largest park in Polanco - "Parque Lincoln", which didn't really impress me either. So I followed the street further south and finally reached the huge "Auditorio Nacional" - a multi-purpose hall with space for 10,000 visitors at the very edge of the district.
Ganz und gar nicht unbelebt sind hingegen die zahlreichen Seitenstraßen der Flaniermeile, in denen sich die wohl teuersten Restaurants der Stadt befinden. Hier tummelt sich die High Society von Mexico City. Durch diese Seitenstraßen erreicht man nach wenigen Schritten der größten Park von Polanco - "Parque Lincoln", der mich aber auch nicht wirklich beeindruckte. So folgte ich der Straße weiter Richtung Süden und erreiche schließlich das riesige "Auditorio Nacional" - einer Mehrzweckhalle mit Platz für 10.000 Zuschauer am äußersten Rand des Viertels.
In summary, I can say that my impression of Polanco was ambivalent. On the one hand, the Museo Soumaya is one of my favourite buildings of CDMX, but on the other hand, I didn't necessarily find the neighbourhood so unique and great that it would be logical for the rich and the famous to feel particularly comfortable here. Personally, I would prefer other districts to live in, but that is of course a matter of taste.
Zusammenfassend kann ich sagen, dass mein Eindruck von Polanco zweigeteilt war. Einerseits ist das Museo Soumaya eines meiner Lieblingsgebäude von CDMX, andererseits fand ich das Viertel nicht unbedingt so einzigartig und toll, dass es logisch wäre, dass sich die Reichen und Schönen hier besonders wohlfühlen. Mir persönlich wären andere Stadtviertel zum Wohnen sympathischer, aber das ist natürlich auch Geschmacksache.
