My opinion and brief review will be this time of the award-winning series The Wire, which in Latin America was known as The Watchmen, and is currently available on HBO max, but which at the time was broadcast by HBO when it was a subscription cable channel in the early 2000s and there were no streaming TV signals. As indicated in the title, my review and comments will be focused this time only on the first season, because I do not consider it fair or appropriate to write only one review of such a good series of 5 seasons and 60 episodes.
Mi opinión y breve reseña serán esta vez de la galardonada serie The Wire que para Latinoamérica fue conocida como Los Vigilantes, y que actualmente se encuentra disponible en HBO max, pero que en su momento fue transmitida por HBO cuando era un canal de suscripción por cable a inicios de la década de los 2000 y no existían ni señales de la Tv por streaming. Como indico en el título, mi reseña y comentarios estarán centrados esta vez solo en la primera temporada, porque no considero justo ni apropiado, escribir de una serie tan buena de 5 temporadas y 60 episodios una sola reseña.

By this I mean that it is very good to deal with it in a general way, because it is a complex series and not at all easy to digest for the general public, nor do I mean that you have to be a scholar to watch it, what I mean is that it is not an occasional weekend series, indeed, some consider it more like a novel, because its plot revolves around many characters, which in turn each has its own story, and to intertwine everything, you must pay close attention, because the series does not take you by the hand to take you through everything that happens, personally I had to go to previous episodes and make some pauses in the middle of scenes to have everything clear.
Cada temporada en The Wire podría ser una serie individual, es decir, con el formato que existe en la actualidad de series de 6 episodios, o como algunos lo llaman, cortos. Con esto me refiero a que es muy buena para tratar sobre ella de manera general, porque es una serie compleja y nada fácil de digerir para el público en general, tampoco quiero decir que hay que ser un erudito para verla, a lo que me refiero es que no es una serie ocasional de un fin de semana, es más, algunos la consideran más como una novela, porque su trama gira entorno a muchos personajes, que a su vez cada uno tiene su propia historia, y para entrelazar todo, debes prestar mucha atención, porque la serie no te toma de la mano para llevarte a través de todo lo que ocurre, personalmente tuve que ir a episodios anteriores y hacer algunas pausas en medio de escenas para tener todo claro.

First season review
The series begins when Angelo Barksdale is on trial for a murder case and the corruption of the justice system and the lack of integrity of the people involved becomes evident, because even though several witnesses confirm that he is the author of the murder, he is released because he is the cousin of Avon Barksdale, the leader of a drug trafficking network in West Baltimore City, in the state of Maryland. Jimmy MacNulty, homicide detective and protagonist of the series, is the one who presented the case, and makes the judge see that the trial has been manipulated by this criminal organization.

From the beginning of the season this plot is revolving around various characters, touching on details of their stories and what role they play in the development of events, and not only focused on the lives of the cops and how they must deal with the mess of their personal lives, of alcohol problems, divorces and the temptation not to be corrupt, etc.. Also addressed are the personal issues of the criminals and antagonists, and how what happened in their lives led them to what they do.

Desde el inicio de la temporada esta trama va girando en torno a varios personajes, tocando detalles de sus historias y que papel desempeñan en el desarrollo de los acontecimientos, y no solo enfocado en las vidas de los policías y como deben lidiar con el desastre de sus vidas personales, de problemas de alcohol, divorcios y la tentación de no ser corruptos, etc. También son abordados los asuntos personales de los criminales y antagonistas, y como lo ocurrido en sus vidas los llevo a lo que hacen.
Police crew
The first chapters can be slow, because they fill you with context, and a lot of police language to lay the groundwork for what is to come, for example, how a unit of policemen is created, who at first seemed like loosers, but as the chapters progressed they got involved in the case and showed their true abilities, a policeman who is there thanks to family favors and makes mistakes that almost expose the whole operation, and turns out to be the key piece to understand the whole process of surveillance and undercover operations, or how a policeman who had been buried in oblivion for 13 years in a department that almost no one remembered existed, turns out to be the leader and mastermind of the operation.

Bunk and McNulty, Bubbles, Stringer and Wallace
James 'Jimmy' McNulty: starring Dominic West, you may know him from his most recent role in the series The Crown, where he played Prince Charles. He is a homicide detective, honest, but with a messed up life, without any aspirations, he shows no interest in moving up within the police force, that makes him a defiant detective who doesn't respect the chain of command, but with an incredible ability to solve homicides in record time. William 'Bunk' Moreland: in previous posts I have already talked about Wendell Pierce, and his extensive career as an actor, so here I will just mention the incredible chemistry that his character and Dominic West's have, both excellent homicide detectives. There is a scene where together they go to the scene of a crime that happened long ago and had not been cleared up, as both together recreate the scene exactly as it happened, and that the detectives in the past could not do it, laying the groundwork and making it clear that they are very good at what they do.

Hay una escena donde juntos de dirigen a la escena de un crimen que ocurrió hace mucho y no había sido aclarado, como ambos en conjunto recrean la escena exactamente como ocurrió, y que los detectives en el pasado no pudieron hacerlo, sentando las bases y dejando claro que son muy buenos en lo que hacen.

Russell 'Stringer' Bell: starring the acclaimed Idris Elba, one of his most recent roles was Bloodsport, a sniper in Suicide Squad who shot Superman. In The Wire he is second in command of the Barksdale clan, but he is the brains of the operation, and his appearances are worthy of a mob boss, in the best Sopranos style. His role is that of a criminal who is not satisfied with what he does, he wants to grow, and for that he constantly prepares himself, and despite being watched by the police, he is always ahead in everything.

Su papel es la de un criminal que no se conforma con lo que hace, quiere crecer, y para eso se prepara constantemente, y a pesar de ser vigilado por la policía, siempre lleva la delantera en todo.
Wallace: played by Michael B. Jordan who you surely know for great movies like Creed and Black Panther, and if you want to know his beginnings as an actor in The Wire you can meet him with only 16 years old playing a young drug dealer, but with the soul of a good boy who knew nothing else to do and was involved by all that crap, is a character that you get attached to, but you should not.
Wallace: interpretado por Michael B. Jordán que seguro conoces por grandes películas como Creed y Black Panther, y si quieres conocer sus inicios como actor en The Wire podrás conocerlo con solo 16 años interpretando a un joven dealer de drogas, pero con el alma de un buen muchacho que no conocía nada mas que hacer y se vio involucrado por toda esa basura, es un personaje de los que te encariñas, pero no debes.
Reginald "Bubbles" Cousins: last but not least, masterfully played by Andre Royo. He is the character that most of the fans of the series sympathized with, he personifies the heroin addict who survives on the streets, sometimes fighting against the evil of drugs, trying to get clean and rebuild his life, but relapsing and collaborating at the same time with the police as a snitch. Bubbles is undoubtedly a clear example of the lives of thousands of people who are victims of this scourge of drugs, and that we put aside because of their problem, forgetting that they are human beings who suffer and who, like us, have a heart and soul.

Es el personaje con que la mayoría de los fanáticos de la serie simpatizaron, personifica al adicto a la heroína que sobrevive en las calles, luchando en ocasiones contra el mal de las drogas, tratando de limpiarse y rehacer su vida, pero recayendo y colaborando a la vez con la policía como soplón. Bubbles sin duda es una muestra clara de la vida de miles de personas que son victimas de este flagelo de las drogas, y que hacemos a un lado por su problema, olvidando que son seres humanos que sufren y que al igual que nosotros tienen alma y corazón.
Conclusion
There are many other characters that play a great role in the series, there are many with whom you get attached, but it is impossible to mention them all, but there is no doubt that The Wire is a guaranteed source of fun, worth watching with friends, and if you don't have friends, this series can surely give them to you, by recommending it to anyone you want to associate with, because they will come back to you and will have a lot to talk about, about how a series that pretends to be about cops, almost doesn't seem to be, and just with the first season you get involved in the lives of street people who are on the other side of the law, staging a lot of drama, with the perfect scenario of the city of Baltimore that agonizes and with its people whose hope is running out in a vertiginous way.
Son muchos otros personajes que hace un gran papel en la serie, hay muchos con los que te encariñas, pero es imposible mencionarlos a todos, pero no cabe dudas que The Wire es fuente garantizada de diversión, que vale la pena ver con amigos, y si no tienes amigos, esta serie de seguro te los puede dar, al recomendarla a cualquier persona con la que te quieras asociar, porque volverán a ti y tendrán mucho de qué hablar, sobre como una serie que se pretende es de policías, casi no lo parece, y apenas con la primera temporada te involucras en la vida de personas de la calle que están al otro lado de la ley, escenificando mucho drama, con el perfecto escenario de la ciudad de Baltimore que agoniza y junto a su gente que se les acaba la esperanza de manera vertiginosa.
