Olympic rings - sand sculpture

I've never been into spectator sports and I think that's a good thing. If I ever get an interest in something I go all in and learn every aspect as I become nearly obsessed. If I was into sport I don't think I would have time for anything else because it is such a big field. You only have to look at football fans to know what I mean. I just have a awful lot of other less important things to be doing.

I do like sports though, but not competitive ones. I used to do cross country running in school and I love to swim. For me it is only about competing against myself, always trying to do better. In that way I am always the winner... and loser.

Olympics

2008 was the year of the Beijing Olympics and so of course it would have to be the subject of at least one of the sand projects that year. Niall, Alan and myself were back in Duncannon, Ireland to make a small tribute to them. This is only a 3 day project and so the pieces are never too big.

For my section I wanted to keep it quite simple and just play with the ring logo. What I came up with wouldn't be winning any meddles but I still quite liked it's simplicity.

Each ring contained a sport which I tried to picture in an interesting way from different angles to show the main action.

As beach sand goes the one in Duncannon is quite nice. It is fine for detail but you always have to be careful with it's strength. Manys a time have we had bad collapses. With such a short project we tend to go a bit safer and with the archways of the rings I was confident enough the whole thing would stay together. Especially when I leaned the whole thing back into the soft sand.

The images themselves were pretty simple, nearly cartoon style. I composed them in such a way that you felt like you were part of the action.

Nothing too impressive with this sculpture really but for the project it did exactly what it said on the tin.

Thanks for reading. I use PeakD to document my work as an ephemeral Sculptor of sand, snow and ice, amongst other things. This will hopefully give it a new life on the Hive Blockchain. Below you will find some of my recent posts.
