Fighting the good Fight!

We shall defend our island,
whatever the cost may be,
we shall fight on the beaches,
we shall fight on the landing grounds,
we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,
we shall fight in the hills;
we shall never surrender.

Quote by Winston Churchill

We could all learn a lesson from this quote by the famous old statesman who led the British from defeat to victory during the Second World War - we should never give up on this exciting world called Steem!

First time using Steempeak, so I'm treading in strange waters but swimmingly happy and not drowning - a big thank you to the developers!

A real mixed bag today as that's how my life's been these past few weeks.

FIGHTING BLUE MONDAYS

We had the trauma of Mom's Acoustic Neuroma affecting her balance again, and then that Blue Monday where anything that could go wrong, did just that!
A shard of glass stuck in my foot, an explosion in the electricity distribution board plus nurses striking at the hospital Mom was being admitted to; and the son moving back home before embarking on a working holiday to Orenburg in western Russia; my life really was turned upside down!

SNOW FIGHTING IN RUSSIA

Orenburg is situated on the Ural River at the Sakmara confluence. This river forms part of the boundary between the continents of Europe and Asia. Interesting to learn that this city was originally founded as a fort in 1735 and became the military centre of the Ural Cossacks.

NORTH & SOUTH WEATHER FIGHTING

Coming from mid summer in sunny South Africa with temperatures like today's 31°C and relative humidity levels of up to 80%; stepping into -9°C must have been quite a shock, but my son's loving this historic true Russian city and the whole new life experience!

Here in the southern hemisphere in Durban we're currently going through one of the hottest and most humid summers we've had in a long time, feels like you're permanently in a sauna; it really becomes unbearable at times; I'm afraid I may just melt away altogether!

Jumping into the pool does cool one down, but not for very long! Showering doesn't help either as you've no sooner dried yourself off than the perspiration starts pouring off again! No saunas needed around here for sure!

Durban gardens are real show-offs with colourful flowers through all seasons as we live in a sub-tropical climate with no frost at all!

Summer here at home and the beach scene taken at Umdloti Beach on the Kwazulu Natal North Coast. Total opposite to the other side of the world!

FLIGHT FIGHTING

My son was fighting for survival with a lengthy trip of around 40 hours with all the stopovers in between!
He went from...

  • Durban to Johannesburg
  • Johannesburg to Istanbul
  • Istanbul to Moscow
  • Moscow to St Petersburg
    And finally...
  • St Petersburg to Orenburg

Not being a jet setter, I was fascinated to learn about the Aerosleep Capsule Hotels, ideal for those needing a nap for a long airport stopover. They however look so small that I think my claustrophobia would prevent me venturing inside and closing that door!

FIGHTING THE WALKING AID

So I told you LAST WEEK that Mom Lily's BRAIN TUMOUR that I wrote about TWO YEARS AGO has gotten bigger and that is why her balance is so bad.
She initially was very happy to use the walker the hospital gave her, but has been rebelling this week as she has to walk slower, so I've been fighting that battle this week!
Mom Lily is fiercely independent and has a mind of her own, so the walker is being parked off more often than I like! Mom used to go for long walks and simply cannot make peace with the fact that she now has to use this implement that is slowing her down, but could save her from a devastating fall!

I told Mom this is her new best friend and the one she can depend on to help her walk; she was happy at first but now detests this THING, as she calls it!

FRIDAY FOOD FIGHTING

As we still had 5 students here this week and I needed to make packed lunches and dinners, last week's menu was repeated and I had no time to make anything special for this very late Food Fight Friday turned into Saturday post, so all I am bringing my Foo Fong Food Fighters today is packed lunches - nothing exciting, nothing special but sure it will fill you up to get you through the day!
