I ran the Frenchay 10km race Sunday morning. This is a race where all the profits go to local charities so is well worth taking part in. http://www.frenchay10k.co.uk
This was the 40th running of the race which was due to take place in 2020 but has been postponed for the last two years because of you know what.
I took part along with my sister, wife and son. This is before the race when were still full of enthusiasm.
It's a painful course with 3 fairly major hills, described as undulations in the race description. I started off running with my son and my wife and sister started a few meters back.
Just after halfway at the top of the second hill there is a switch back where I could see that my son and I were about 30 seconds ahead of my wife. Sister wasn't in site so it was looking good that she would be buying the drinks later.
About 2 km to go and I was still keeping up with my son when my wife went flying past the pair of us. I managed to up my pace to keep with her and started dropping my son.
The final hill is the steepest and about 200m long ending about 100m before the finish line. Almost at the top we were really struggling and both my wife and I slowed down quite a bit. My son went by us which encouraged me into a final push. I couldn't catch him but I dropped my wife by a few meters by the time we finished.
What I didn't initially consider was that as my wife had started a few seconds behind me so she had those seconds in hand and ended up beating me by 0.1 seconds!! Ah well next time.
My wife's time was good enough for her to win her age group which put the icing on the cake of an excellent day out.
For taking part we all received a mug. These were made just before the original race was postponed so they all have the wrong date on. They make a quirky reminder of the day.
