Yesterday we went on an excursion to the East Frisian island of Norderney. With 26.29 square kilometres, Norderney is the second largest of the East Frisian group of islands after Borkum. The ferry took us from Norddeich across the Wadden Sea in about 45 minutes.
Gestern haben wir einen Ausflug auf die ostfriesische Insel Norderney unternommen. Mit 26,29 Quadratkilometern ist Norderney nach Borkum die zweitgrößte der ostfriesischen Inselgruppe. Mit der Fähre ging es ab Norddeich in ca. 45 Minuten über das Wattenmeer.
When we arrived on Norderney, we took the bus from the harbour to the centre. The journey only took a few minutes. We walked past the Marienhöhe and came directly to the sea. The view of the wide Wadden Sea, the air and the sound of the waves... simply wonderful. We were immediately overcome by that special "island feeling". Passing the well-known milk bar, where a few people were enjoying the view with a cool drink and cool lounge music, we strolled along the beach promenade.
Angekommen auf Norderney sind wir mit dem Bus vom Hafen bis ins Zentrum gefahren. Die Fahrt dauerte nur ein paar Minuten. Wir gingen vorbei an der Marienhöhe und kamen direkt ans Meer. Der Ausblick auf das weite Wattenmeer, die Luft und das rauschen der Wellen... einfach wunderbar. Direkt überkam uns dieses spezielle "Inselfeeling". Vorbei an der bekannten Milchbar in und an der sich so einige Menschen mit einem kühlen Getränk bei cooler Loungemusik tummelten und den Ausblick genossen, schlenderten wir weiter der Strandpromenade entlang.

Von der Georgshöhe hat man einen schönen Rundumblick über einen Teil der Insel.
You can discover the historic bathing trolley at the Kurplatz in the centre of Norderney. There are also countless restaurants and shopping opportunities here. A bit too much for my taste, as it had a very urban character and no longer exudes the cosiness that one might hope for on an island. But given the daily influx of tourists, that's understandable. If you like it a bit quieter, you're probably better off on one of the other East Frisian islands.
Den historischen Badekarren kann man am Kurplatz im Zentrum von Norderney entdecken. Hier gibt es auch unzählige Restaurants und Shopping Möglichkeiten. Für meinen Geschmack schon etwas zu viel, da es dort so einen sehr städtischen Charakter hatte und keine Gemütlichkeit mehr ausstrahlt, die man sich auf einer Insel vielleicht erhofft. Aber angesichts der täglichen Touristenströme natürlich auch verständlich. Wer es etwas ruhiger mag ist wahrscheinlich auf einer der anderen Ostfriesischen Inseln besser aufgehoben.
What I liked were the many old streets with cobblestones and the architecture of some of the buildings. Of course, there are also some architectural sins in the front row of the beach in the form of box-like high-rises that are almost reminiscent of prefabricated buildings. But in the middle of it all, there are always picturesque buildings in the style of the youth and the seaside resort.
Was mir gut gefallen hat, waren die vielen alten Straßen mit Kopfsteinpflaster und die Architektur einiger Gebäude. Natürlich gibt es in vorderster Strandreihe auch einige Bausünden in Form von kastenartigen Hochhäusern die schon fast an Plattenbauten erinnern. Aber mittendrin finden sich immer wieder pittoresken Gebäude im Jugend- und Bäderstil.
Our trip to Norderney was wonderful. We would have liked to stay longer to explore the island further. Especially the nature in the east of the island would have been worth seeing and experiencing.
I think we will return to Norderney again to go on a discovery tour. But after 20,000 steps, we were also glad to enjoy the 45-minute return journey on the ferry and to process our impressions 😉
Unser Ausflug nach Norderney war wunderschön. Gerne wären wir noch länger geblieben um die Insel weiter zu erkunden. Gerade die Natur im Osten der Insel wäre sicherlich noch Sehens und erlebenswert gewesen.
Ich denke, dass wir noch einmal nach Norderney wiederkehren, um auf Entdeckungstour zu gehen. Aber nach 20.000 Schritten waren wir auch froh, die 45 Minuten Rückfahrt auf der Fähre zu genießen und unsere Eindrücke zu verarbeiten 😉
