OzarkLife Wanderings ~ August 7, 2023

Finally, we’re getting a break from the extreme heat we’ve been having here in the Ozarks! Temperatures have been above 100 Fahrenheit for the last few weeks, and today it was a humid yet refreshing 89.

@nomaddreamer and I decided to take advantage of the break from the heat and hit the trail.

The mushrooms that were everywhere in the woods have disappeared; we’re assuming the turtles and other wildlife have depleted the buffet, and the heat and lack of recent rain haven’t allowed for any new growth. Storms and rain are on their way to us over the next week, though, so I’m hoping there will be more to see soon.

This Atlantic Pigeon Wing flower didn’t seem to mind the heat. There were few other flowers along the trail, so this one stuck out!

The cicadas have been loving the weather, and the woods are full of them. Their buzz can seem deafening at times. They are so loud right now that birdsongs are completely drowned out.

The cicada above made me think something was going to explode when it dropped to the forest floor, right next to my ear as I was hiking past. It’s just amazing to me how loud they are!

This Three Toed Box Turtle was just hanging out next to the trail. It was the only one we saw today; hopefully the expected rains and subsequent growth will bring more out next time we go hiking.

After such a long stretch of high temperatures and insane humidity, it was lovely to get out in nature for awhile. I’m looking forward to cooler temps for the next couple of weeks, and so is Mia the Wonder Aussie. She’s ready to take on the trails again!

Have a wonderful night/day, wherever you are out there in the Hiveverse! #Gotakeahike!
