Sure, we may all be getting older, but the music never stops, right? And musically I can totally connect with the same strain that has gone through my own youth, and persisted into my present days. For this reason, it was a great pleasure to immerse myself in the kind of stuff that kids listen to these days - in Germany. Turbostaat is a German punk band who have been active since the turn of the millennium. They are great at capturing the teen angst of the present (okay, let's say the last decades).
Sicher, wir werden alle älter, aber die Musik hört nie auf, oder? Und musikalisch kann ich mich voll und ganz mit der gleichen Ader verbinden, die durch meine eigene Jugend floss, und bis in unsere heutigen Tage fortbesteht. Aus diesem Grund war es eine große Freude, in die Art von Zeugs einzutauchen, das kids heutzutage hören - in Deutschland. Turbostaat ist eine seit der Jahrtausendwende aktive deutsche Punkband. Sie fangen die jugendliche Angst der Gegenwart (okay, sagen wir, der letzten Jahrzehnte) auf großartige Weise ein.

Pennen bei Glufke (Crashing at Glufke's)
Ja, so ähnlich stelle ich es mir vor bei Glufke zu pennen. Dass die Familie total disfunktional ist, ist ja nix neues. Aber der Text bietet einen guten Einblick in alle drei Sichtweisen dieser Nuklearfamilie am Abgrund. Und das Video ist eine exzellente Visualisierung des Lebens in kleinen Schachteln, in die unsere Gesellschaft verkommen ist. Hübsch ist's nicht, aber dafür umso ehrlicher. Klar, keiner wird so ohne weiteres bei Glufke pennen wollen, es sei denn zu Hause ist es noch um einiges schlimmer...!
Yes, that's kinda like how I imagine crashing at Glufke's. That the family is totally dysfunctional is obvious. But the text offers a good insight into all three perspectives of this nuclear family on the brink. And the video is an excellent visualization of the life in small boxes that our society has degenerated into. It's not pretty, but all the more honest. Sure, no one will want to crash at Glufke's voluntarily, unless the situation at home is even worse than theirs...!

The crimes of our ancestors... may they have been committed as recently as the last generation. And no, you don't need to go back to the first half of the 20th century for that, but that is precisely the example they are using here. Did we know about the concentration camps (or other similar atrocities)? The inserted clip of the questioning of a Nazi admiral underlines this extreme case, but can certainly be applied to any recent hypocrisy just as much.
Die Verbrechen unserer Vorfahren... auch wenn sie erst in der letzten Generation begangen wurden. Und nein, dafür muss man nicht in die erste Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts zurückkehren, aber das ist genau das Beispiel, das sie hier verwenden. Wussten wir von den Konzentrationslagern (oder anderen ähnlichen Gräueltaten)? Der eingefügte Clip der Vernehmung eines Nazi-Admirals unterstreicht den Extremfall, lässt sich aber genauso gut auf jede kürzliche Heuchelei anwenden.

Ein geniales Lied mit einem faszinierenden Video. Über eine persönliche Tragödie aus einer scheinbar respektablen Familie bis hin in den Krieg. Aber das Video, einer Band, die gerade zur Probe aufbaut, erstmal falsch im Synkron mit der Musik, zum Schluss aber volle Kanne abrockt. Genial gemacht, auf jeden Fall. Und natürlich ein super Rhythmus.
A brilliant song with a fascinating video. About a personal tragedy from a seemingly respectable family, all the way up to the war. But that video! A band that is just setting up for a rehearsal, initially out of sync with the music, but in the end totally it rocks out. Brilliantly done, for sure. And of course a great rhythm.
