Behind the raucous din of The Crow's Nest, the back rooms lay in stark contrast — a hush fell over these private chambers, where the walls seemed to absorb sound and the air carried the weight of unspoken deals. Ricky, his back against the wall, inched closer to the room from which muted voices seeped like mist.
Inside, a circle of faces, obscured by the dim light, their features blurred as if to protect the guilty, discussed in earnest. Ricky’s hand moved discreetly over his notepad, scribbling shadows of the conversation.
Unknown Voice: "The child is the key. We must find him before Thomson does."
The mention of a child caused Ricky's breath to catch, a chill running down his spine. He dared not move, his presence a secret shared only with the shadows that cloaked him.
Meanwhile, Thomson's diversion continued. A bottle crashed to the floor, amber liquid painting the wooden planks as patrons shouted and scrambled.
Thomson: "My apologies, gentlemen, a mere slip of the hand!"
His apology was a performance, his eyes never ceasing their surveillance. The bartender, a knowing accomplice to the staged disruption, gave Thomson a nod, a silent signal that the time was now.
As the commotion reached its peak, Thomson slipped away, unnoticed in the chaos. He found his way to the back, to the door behind which Ricky gathered whispered plots.
Thomson (murmuring to himself): "Hang tight, Ricky. I'm coming."
Back in the meeting room, the conversation took a sudden turn, the voices dropping to a near inaudible thread of sound.
Second Unknown Voice: "Thomson's closer than we thought. It's time to move to the next phase."
The words were a trigger, and Ricky knew he had to leave before the meeting adjourned. He backed away, steps silent as the grave, his heart pounding a warning to flee.
Thomson met Ricky in the corridor, the younger man's eyes wide with urgency.
Ricky: "They know you're close, Thomson. They mentioned a child — your child — as the key."
The news struck Thomson like a physical blow, his stoic facade cracking just for a moment. Rage and hope warred within him, a tempest that threatened to overflow.
Thomson: "We need to act fast. They're planning to move, and we can't afford to lose this trail."
The episode ends with Thomson and Ricky retreating into the breaking day, the sun's rays piercing through the fog, illuminating paths hidden in darkness. They carried with them the weight of dangerous knowledge and the urgency of a chase that was narrowing its circle.
To be continued...
Who were the voices in the shadows, and why is the child key to their plans? What is the next phase they speak of, and can Thomson intervene before it's too late?
