We're all capable of believing the most outrageous things, yet the fact that there are still so many people who believe the official account of what happened on September 11th 2001 amazes me to no end.

I think that 9/11 is the most important event of our times, it's a pivotal point in history that decides which direction the human experience takes on this planet of ours. And it's still being decided I guess, but right now we're very close to making the wrong choice as to which direction we'll take at this particular fork in our collective historical road. There's no denying that this tragic event changed the lifes of almost all people in the so called civilized world. The Patriot Act in America, the constant wars in the middle east, the worldwide "war against terrorism", the almost universal retreat behind our own borders and the increasing resistance against immigration and immigrants are but a few consequences of our willingness to believe the official accounts of the events on that pivotal day.
So much of the world politics, national and international, are based on the universal acceptance of the official story on 9/11, that it baffles me to see, hear and read so many people defending it. Do these people not see that their and everybody else's lifes are being dictated by their willing suspension of disbelief? I believe that the fact that most of us experienced the tragic events through a television screen is in a large part responsible for the acceptance of the surreal reporting on the attacks. We're all used to suspend our disbelief in order to temporarily leave this world and become immersed in the one the performing artists on screen have created for our entertainment.
The term suspension of disbelief or willing suspension of disbelief has been defined as a willingness to suspend one's critical faculties and believe something surreal; sacrifice of realism and logic for the sake of enjoyment. The term was coined in 1817 by the poet and aesthetic philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who suggested that if a writer could infuse a "human interest and a semblance of truth" into a fantastic tale, the reader would suspend judgement concerning the implausibility of the narrative.

It's not really that we stop disbelieving, but much more that we willingly believe two contradictory realities; we still know and believe that we are sitting in a room on a couch watching a movie, while simultaneously "believing" the fictional world of the movie in order to be emotionally moved by what happens there. It is, in fact, a willing act of cognitive dissonance, something we're all prone to exhibit in one way or another, but especially when watching the screen, big or small. The screen is capable of making us "lose ourself"; at some point we're no longer aware that we're sitting in the room, we are over there and feeling emotions caused by our limbic system. And this emotional experience is intensified because the brain doesn't have to waist energy promoting any motor impulses; we won't jump up out of our seats to run in and rescue the damsel in distress.
This must have been what happened to us, or at least part of it. The official story on 9/11 goes like this: planes crash into World Trade Center buildings, they explode in a ball of fire causing a couple of floors to burn, the heat of which softened the steel structure which in turn initiated the "pancaking" of subsequent floors falling on top of themselves until the buildings had crashed all the way down to ground level, all in almost free-fall speed. This happened in the morning, but in the afternoon, hours later, another one, building 7, crashed in on its own footprint in free-fall speed. No planes crashed into that one, it just magically came straight down in the exact same way buildings collapse in controlled demolitions.
The way these three buildings came down are but a small sampling of all the smoking guns that should let people ask themselves if the official reports have any truth to them, but they are the most visible ones, they're quite "in your face". How can someone look at these collapses, then listen to the official account and think to themselves "yeah, that makes sense"? Years ago a Dutch engineer, an expert in controlled demolitions was asked to look at the collapse of building 7 on a YouTube video and give his opinion. He immediately reacted by saying that it is a very well executed, controlled demolition and started pointing at all the characteristics of such demolitions. Only after he had given his opinion, he was told that this was the third building to crash on 9/11; this expert was like many average citizens and didn't even know of a third building going down that day. Surprised he added something like "well, they must have worked very fast then."

In the field of psychology, cognitive dissonance is the mental discomfort (psychological stress) experienced by a person who simultaneously holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values. This discomfort is triggered by a situation in which a belief of a person clashes with new evidence perceived by that person. When confronted with facts that contradict personal beliefs, ideals, and values, people will find a way to resolve the contradiction in order to reduce their discomfort.

This is where I see the willing suspension of disbelief, or rather the willing act of cognitive dissonance coming in. You see, the human psyche continuously strives for inner consistency, so we find ways to integrate, refute or simply avoid facts in life that contradict our basic inner believe systems, our basic worldview. If we admit that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the worldwide strengthening of the surveillance state and the trillion dollar "war against terrorism", are all based on a lie, a hoax, a carefully scripted life action drama, that's the same as admitting we are living a lie, or have been for the past 17 years at least. It means admitting that there exist truly evil men and women, willing to wage war anywhere on the globe with no regard for human lifes or life in general. It means admitting to being played a fool all these years, like having the firm ground provided by your most basic beliefs pulled from beneath your feet and tumbling down an abyss of fear and uncertainty.
I understand that many individuals will defend the official account to the point that they call people like me crazy conspiracy theorists; no one wants to fall down that abyss. But you'll have to excuse me for not giving it a rest, for wanting to pull you down with me. Beliefs inform actions and our collective actions have left us in a world where Barack Obama can receive a Nobel Price for peace, and a half-wit tv celebrity can win the election for the most powerful job in the world. Obama got the price only 9 months into his first term; that price was based solely on the man's rhetoric, not his actions, as he intensified drone bombings and never really left Iraq nor ended the decades long war in Afghanistan. And Trump...? What can I say that hasn't been said before and what can I say that wouldn't be perceived as another slap in the face by those supportive of him? I'll just say that his election as president of the United States of America feels as surreal to me as people's continued willingness to suspend their disbelief regarding the 9/11 attacks.
If you are one of the many that still cling to the mainstream view on the most pivotal event in our recent collective history, I would ask you this: please make free some time, not even two hours, to look at the video I link beneath this article. It's a public lecture at the Delft University of Technology by Richard Gage who represents more than 2300 international architects and engineers who question the official explanation on how these buildings were able to collapse on their respective footprints on September 11th 2001; they are one of the many organisations that demand a truly independent investigation on the 9/11 events. If the information in this lecture doesn't make you at least doubt the government's and mainstream media's account of that day, I'll suspend my attempts to make you believe otherwise and continue to live this evil fantasy together with you.
