My thoughts know no time or distance. They flow freely from one to another, to the next, back to the previous and first, regularly touching other limitless realms while conversing with other minds. When these mental landscapes touch, they can't help but mingle, invading each other's territories without conquering an inch, instead creating new ground, fertile places where new ideas are born and added to all free flowing consciousnesses.

My mental landscape knows no independence, no 4th of July nor any other time or date, as it is as interconnected and interdependent as it is endless; countless other minds have touched it, have spread their seeds and grown new understanding and fresh perspectives, the exciting and tasteful fruits of surprising insights and never before imagined realizations. Mine is one of those romantic souls who's convinced that passing around those fruits is the best and only way to ensure that our collective mental landscape, as well as our material world landscape, stays healthy and grows even more new and exciting fruits in an endless colorful garden where the insects of conversation cross-pollinate the flowers of our thoughts.
But there are poisonous fruits as well, some of which have shaped our shared reality quite differently than the imagined fertile garden I described here, and have taken the form of rigidly bordered and tightly regimented gardens, a mosaic of muted colors instead of brightly colored and intermingled rainbows. The tiles in this dark and grey mosaic are carefully arranged along the grid-lines of the predominant global ideology, fruits selected for efficient reproduction and accelerated growth, buzzing cross-pollinating insects murdered to be replaced by careful genetic and memetic manipulation. Landscapes, mental and material, have been appropriated by the gardeners and farmers who's manure carries the particular stink of free market propaganda, the loudest voices invade all mental landscapes, killing the insects and regimenting the new poisonous fruits in an ever less colorful mosaic.
The bug repellent used by these farmers from hell is called "intellectual property rights". In yesterday's post, Morality Of Taxation, I already shared my thoughts on how actual property rights rob us from everything that should not be owned, and today a new brightly colored and sweet tasting fruit reminded me to how this is also true for the flowers that grow in the mental landscape. Ideas should be spread freely, inventions should be tried and tested in a landscape that knows no borders and has no foreseeable end; ideas are themselves the product of mental and spiritual cross-pollination, and can therefore never be claimed by any singular gardener or farmer. Our species has such great potential, we really do have the knowledge and capacity to create a Garden of Eden, a Shangri-La, Walhalla, Utopia, right here, right now, a global as well as a mental landscape in which almost all fruits are edible, a place where, if not our bodies at least our minds and thoughts stay forever young, flexible, inventive, progressive, boldly growing fruits where no fruit has grown before... Stop erecting fences, do what comes naturally; you know you're bursting with eagerness to share that new idea. Don't let greed lure you to the dull mosaic landscape, stay away from the bug repellent, be a REAL gardener and spread your memetic seeds as widely as possible. Join me on this journey; it won't make you rich, but the sights, the smells, the sounds, the tastes and the colors, the knowledge that you tried to leave the world in a better place than where you found it... they're worth every dollar you don't get, I promise.
So, having done today's mental sowing, here's a fruit I found quite tasteful, proof in my opinion that nature always finds a way, brightly colored evidence showing that even in the madness induced landscape of regimented mosaics, occasionally something breaks free from the grid. It's not for everybody, but isn't that what cross-pollination is all about, trying something new, risking the safe space of comfortability with daring new leaps of faith? Not everyone's gone mad... ;-)
