@kommienezuspadt just introduced me to Steemit! Art, Karate, and Authentic Connection

My name is Jordan. I heard about Steemit through my buddy @kommienezuspadt. We grew up in Northeastern Pennsylvania (think TV's The Office). We both used our various talents to break out and create our own careers. We connect every decade or so to talk about art, life, relationships, comics, business, and growing up in our weird hometown.

After I left PA I moved to Boston, then Portland, OR, before I finally landed in Seattle, WA. The Pacific Northwest feels like home. I love the trees, the rocks, the water, and the overall vibe. In 2011 I opened Fighting Chance Seattle, a martial arts dojo. I taught kickboxing, karate, and self-defense for the next seven years. My dojo was unique for having a student base that was 80% female and a progressive teaching style that was rooted in empowerment, not shame.

Right now I'm in a period of transition.  I closed my business to bring my work to a national audience. I teach an old style of karate focused on practical self-defense (not what you'd see at the average suburban strip mall). My teaching practice is trauma-aware and rooted in centuries-old warrior traditions. I'm inspired to help people to reconnect to their shared humanity through martial arts practice. I also write, draw, and make videos -- and I'm looking forward to integrating those aspects of myself into my new business.

I'm looking forward to exploring this new way of sharing my work and connecting with others.
