A trip to Japan will not be complete without shopping for omiyage (souvenir). There are many different types of shopping places in Japan such as departmental stores or shopping malls, discount or general merchandise stores, lifestyle or retail stores, shopping streets or arcades (usually sheltered) and pharmacies. Let’s find out more about them.
1. Departmental Stores or Shopping Malls
Departmental stores or shopping malls in Japan are typically buildings with at least a few levels. The top level usually comprises of F&B establishments whereas the basement level (also known as depachika) comprises of supermarket, food and grocery stalls. They are well-organized with sections or departments, and some departmental stores comprise of standing stores or shops with different labels. Most departmental stores in Japan are easily accessible from train stations.
If you are interested in browsing or purchasing branded labels, high street fashion, imported items, high quality or made-in-Japan products, a departmental store or shopping mall is the right place for you. Goods sold are tax refundable at a designated tax refund counter.

- Do plan your time properly as departmental stores usually close early at 8PM or 9PM. However, F&B establishments within the mall close later at 11PM.
