Top Guitarist (Notes from Under the Tatami Mats–72 … My Adventures in Japan)

He was concerned only with playing great music.

Jo, a friend of mine, was just one of the many talented and creative guitarists that I met in Japan. But whenever I heard him play, I was always superbly impressed.

In it for the sound

Like many others great musicians, in Japan or any other country, he remained an amateur.

He was concerned only with playing great music, not with making money. Possibly as a result, it remained only a hobby, and not his profession.

Too bad for us listeners. But ultimately, great for us listeners.

Sound echoes

On a related note – A mutual acquaintance told me how she remembered seeing Jo walking the streets of their hometown, with his guitar slung over his back. That image has stayed with me for years – as has the sound of Jo's blissful guitar, which continues to echo in my mind.
