The Island of Rangitoto is a major landmark of Auckland City. Situated in the middle of the Hauraki Gulf, Rangitoto is a volcanic island formed about 6000 years ago, and was one of last volcanoes that was formed in the Auckland volcanic region. Today, the symmetrical and conical island is extinct, but is now a popular attraction for travellers who are interested in hiking and spending time with nature.
Because of its prominence in the Auckland harbour, it is one of the most recognisable icon associated with Auckland, and can be seen in many parts of city. You can get a particular good view of Rangitoto from the Mission Bay area, both from the main beach and the headlands, where it stands tall in the middle of the deep blue sea, linking the sea and the sky. It can also be seen up at the Auckland Domain and on One Tree Hill, where the island becomes one with the Auckland Cityscape, giving Auckland that unique crossover between suburban and the wilderness.
