Two things I really got from reading this book.
- Know and Plan what your Retirements Expenses will be
- Understand what you "Need" vs what you "Want"
Know and Plan
Most of the time everyone says that you will need to save a certain % of your income for retirement. This book dives into that theory and then stats that it would be better to save for the expenses you will have during retirement instead.
To know what expenses you will have in retirement, you must first understand the expenses you currently have - bills, loans, etc. And then determine if you will still have these expenses after you retire.
Once you know what your expenses might be in retirement, then you can start planning how to save to reach that magic number so to speak.
Need vs Want
We all have a lot of expenses that we pay on an ongoing basis. But are these really expenses that are critical to our lives. Understanding which expenses are for things you "Need" vs things you "Want" is very important. This is one of the first steps you should take when trying to understand your expenses.
I am not saying you should not spend money on what you "Want". I am just saying you need to understand that if you postpone and do not spend on your "Wants" in the present, you will be able to save more and possibly be in a position to say "BYE" to that job you so despise because you have saved enough to cover your "Needs" for a longer time period into the future.
