Hey Steemians
Just when you thought it was safe to head back to the cinema with all Marvel Cinematic Universe movies safety out of the way for the year we get given one last money grab with an anti-hero spin-off in Venom.
Seems like Marvel has found a new formula it's starting to push on us and milking it for all its worth. The anti-hero side project is in full swing. It started with Deadpool, then we had Logan and now Venom. While it looks like Marvel's opportunity to be dark, take more creative risks and appeal to an older audience which they did well with Deadpool and Logan.
However, in Venom, it feels like it fell in between their more commercial offering and their anti-hero series and didn't do either any justice. It could have really been a great movie should it have stuck to one style instead of trying to appeal to as many people as possible.
If you're a Spider-Man fan you're going to have to leave your panties at home because you'll have them in a twist from the number of liberties they take with the origin of venom. It's not tied to the comics or the marvel universe, its s atand alone story so leave the crying about plot holes and character flaws and not sticking to the original content at home, please. Put on your big boy pants you neckbeard fanboy you!
Plot
The movie tells the story of an investigative journalist Eddie Brock who has a bit of a chip on his shoulder. He gets the opportunity of a life time in interviewing tycoon Carlton Drake, the notorious and brilliant founder of the Life Foundation.
While investigating one of Drake's experiments, Eddie's body merges with the alien Venom -- leaving him with superhuman strength and power. Twisted, dark and fueled by rage, Venom and Eddie try to form a superhero team up to take on the baddies.
Trailer for Venom
The good the bad and the Venomous
Sad to say but the plot is nothing too special just your unfriendly neighbourhood anti-hero, mopping around feeling sorry for himself and then wham gets super abilities so he can be super strong and mope around for the rest of the second act.
Apart from Tom Hardy and Riz Ahmed the rest of the cast feel quite stale and some scenes should be epic but its ruined by some bad dialogues and weak acting. It feels like everything else is filler and pushed aside as we build up to the rivalry between Eddie and Carlton.
Venom is also far too humorous for a murdering psychopathic symbiote and his one lines often seem out of character for something that has no empathy or shouldn't have any emotion. If it were implied that he feels it from of the host, I would have bought it but it the idea of where their connection begins and ends was never explored.
The climax of the final fight is not really all that satisfying 'wow'. The conclusions of the final battle are not clear enough as they quickly try to wrap up the 3rd act and give Stan Lee his cameo.
The CGI was fairly impressive and they really nailed the symbiote and the suite (apart from where it gets its spider-man-eque look from when never bonding with spider-man) and showcasing the limits of Venoms abilities put together some crazy stunt sequences you won't soon find anywhere.
The relationship between Eddy and Venom does seem genuine as they feel each other out and the dialogues between the two are some of the strongest and most memorable in the movie. Some Eddy and Venom's interactions also generate some comedy scene and it's quite entertaining.
My rating
The movie has some real entertainment value and in leading man Tom Hardy the acting is always on point, it just seems to be too focused on trying to appeal to everyone and also trying to set up a franchise instead of trying to tell a well fleshed out story.
I'd have to give it a solid 7 out of 10 and no, you're not getting more, don't try to pout, no pupp dog eyes are going to help it is what it is!
Have at it
