Australian Music Charts: The No.1 Singles from 1969

January 1969

Today, being the last day of January, I thought I'd flash-back to the year 1969 and reminisce the number one songs that were topping the Australian charts at the time.

Starting with January 1969, my intention is to follow up with a new post each month listing the Number One songs from that month (ie: next month's post will feature the number one singles from February 1969 and so on)

Why did I choose to the year 1969?

Well, 1969 is now a half-century ago (yep, that's 50 years) and I thought it would be interesting to see what the masses were tapping their toes to back in the day...!

Despite what you may be thinking, this is DEFINITELY the ONLY reason why I chose 1969 as my starting point...

There is NO personal significance to that year what-so-ever... I mean, it's not like I'm old enough to have been born in that year, Gee's Louise... ;P

(And if you believe that, I've also got a bridge over-looking Sydney Harbour that I'm trying to sell. )

More to the point, I was genuinely interested to see this list of songs for myself considering they were originally recorded 50 years ago and in many cases, are still included on playlists of popular commercial radio stations. (well, that is, on Australian radio)

This made me wonder if listeners (young and old) are aware of how long ago these 'classics' were actually recorded?

For instance, in 2006, Jessica Simpson released a cover of 'These Boots Are Made For Walkin', originally recorded by Nancy Sinatra in 1966. As I was singing along to the radio, my daughter was surprised to hear that I knew all the words.

'How do you know the words to this song?' she asked with suspicion.

'Oh, this is an old song', I started to tell her... however, her reply (below) was hilarious and will never be forgotten.

'No it's not, Mum, this song was only released last Thursday...!

Anyhoo, as you can see below, I've listed the Number One Singles that were topping the Australian Charts in January 1969 and I've also provided a link so you can easily have a quick listen to the song and (if you're as old as me) wonder where all those years went.
