Celebrating NZ music throughout May: 10 - Dave Dobbyn / The Beths

Remember we had a listen to Th’ Dudes and “Bliss” last week and I promised more Dave Dobbyn? Well, tonight’s the night...

Dave Dobbyn has been producing NZ music since 1979 and still going strong. MuzicNetNz says:

Dave Dobbyn is regarded as a national treasure in New Zealand. Wherever Kiwis gather around the world, it is likely to be songs by Dave Dobbyn they sing when thinking of home… songs, written by Dobbyn, had moved people throughout the country. They were songs they had danced to with their first lover, songs they have married to, songs that made them laugh and cry or even played when burying their loved ones.

From 1979 to the early 80’s, he was with Th’ Dudes, performing such kiwi classics as “Bliss” and “Be Mine Tonight”. You can listen to “Bliss” on this post from last week. He then went on to form DD Smash, which was active till the mid 80’s. Some of their well known songs included “Outlook for Thursday”, “Whaling” and “Magic (What She Do)”

Let’s check out “Outlook for Thursday” from 1983 first

And we can’t miss out “Magic (What She Do)” from 1985

From here, he went on to work on the Footrot Flats movie. Here’s the movie clip that went along with “You Oughta Be In Love”

Another classic from the movie was from Dave and the group Herbs: “Slice of Heaven”

During his solo career from 1988 to the present, his most well known song would be “Loyal”. @conradt covered his solo career in this recent post, and featured “Loyal” and “Welcome Home” from 2005. Pop over and check them out.

I’ll finish with a translation of Welcome Home into Māori “Nau Mai Rā” performed last year.

Featured on the NZ Music Month website today

I’m amazed how much new kiwi music is being featured on this website. Not necessarily always to my taste. But it will always to be to somebody’s...

Today’s song is “Future Me Hates Me” by The Beths

The Beths put out an EP “Warm Blood” in 2016 and have a new album on the way. Here’s “Lying In The Sun” from “Warm Blood”

Thanks for listening
