The lyrics are in her native language, Khmer, and present her experiences as if in “a kind of dream.”
The Cambodian Space Project – “The Passenger”
“The Passenger” (2018 – original from 1977)
This intriguing track is not so much a cover of Iggy’s great song, but an animated re-interpretation of it by the lead singer of The Cambodian Space Project, Kak Channthy. While Iggy’s passenger described his short trips back and forth through “the city’s ripped backsides,” Channthy's passenger is on a long journey across an entire continent.
A World, A Dream

Based on her experiences during the journey, Channthy rewrote the lyrics in her native language, Khmer. I could not find the lyrics, but apparently they present her experiences as if in “a kind of dream.” (Image source)
The Cambodian Space Project

For close to a decade, they worked and played to reinvigorate Cambodia’s rock music scene, which had been vibrant during the 1960s, but which had been obliterated by the Khmer Rouge. CSP released 5 albums, and inspired “an astonishing arts and cultural revival” in the country. The band toured a total of 24 countries around the world.
The Destination and Destiny of a Diva
Channthy has been called “Cambodia’s Amy Winehouse” and, in a nod to the great Cape Verdean singer Cesária Évora, “the barefoot diva of the Cambodian rice fields.”
In March 2018, Kak Channthy died in a traffic accident. (Image source)
