On Tuesday, June 19th 2018, US announced the decision to abandon the UN Human Rights Council. Fantastic news!
Let’s just analyze a bit from the beginning of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s opening statement:
Pompeo: “The Trump administration is committed to protecting and promoting that god-given dignity and freedom of every human being. Every individual has rights that are inherent and enviable.”
Everyone but that guy, Julian Assange, right, Pompy?
Pompeo: “They're given by God and not by government. Because of that no government must take them away.”
Except US government, which is clearly above God, right, Pompy?
Pompeo: “For decades the United States has led global efforts to promote human rights. Often through multilateral institutions while we have seen improvements in certain human rights situations for far too long we have waited while that progress comes too slowly or in some cases never comes.”

Pompeo: “Too many commitments have gone unfulfilled. President Trump wants to move the ball forward. From day one he has called out institutions or countries who say one thing and do another.”
You mean commitments like JCPOA, right Pompy? What was the institution that has closed that deal?
Pompeo: “That's precisely the problem at the Human Rights Council. As President Trump said at the UN General Assembly it is a massive source of embarrassment to the United Nations that some governments with egregious human rights records sit on the Human Rights Council.”
Did you mean governments with egregious human rights records, like Saudi Arabia which has a penchant of beheading people, and is at the helm of the Human Rights Council because of your government, Pompy? Or your government who has just promoted torture-loving war criminal to the top position of the most important Intelligence service?
Pompeo: “We have no doubt that there was once a noble vision for this council. But today we need to be honest. The Human Rights Council is a poor defender of human rights. Worse than that the Human Rights Council has become an exercise in shameless hypocrisy with many of the world's worst human rights abuses going ignored and some of the world's most serious offenders sitting on the council itself.”
But not any more, right, Pompy? You are really going out of it?
Pompeo: “The only thing worse than a council that does almost nothing to protect human rights as a council that covers for human rights abuses and is therefore an obstacle to progress and an impediment to change. The Human Rights Council enabels abuses by absolving wrongdoers through silence and falsely condemning those who commited no offence.”
You mean like protecting Israel with your veto power no matter what it is doing, right, Pompy?
We could go really long like this, but you can already see how Pompy is full of it.
Haley: “For too long the Human Rights Council has been a protector of human rights abusers and a cesspool of political bias.”
See, Pompy? Even your ambassador in the UN can’t find diplomatic expression.
Haley: “Being a member of this council is a privilege and no country who was a human rights violator should be allowed a seat at the table.”
And I must say, for the first time in my life I tend to agree with that… whatever she is:
It is really big progres when the greatest human rights abuser removes itself from the Human Rights Council. Which may not be good news for the migrants to US and its own citizens, but at least the rest of the World can take a breather now…
