This song was inspired by this little discussion with @gillianpearce. I said I would turn it into a song and this is the result. If you don't know, a hosepipe ban is when there is a water shortage and you are not allowed to use a hose to water the garden or wash your car. We don't have one yet, but it's possible if we don't get some rain soon. We have a lot of plants to water and we've used up our rainwater supplies. We have to pay for the piped water. I don't actually tend to use the hose when watering anyway.
This song is entered in the Open Mic Contest run by @luzcypher. This is my 55th entry. I really don't expect to win when there are so many talented people out there, but I enjoy it anyway.
I realise I put on a bit of an accent to sing this, but it just felt right for a blues. Ideally I'd have played slide guitar for this, if I could.
Here are the lyrics:
Woke up this morning and the sun was shining hot
I wish it was raining, but no it is not
I've got the hosepipe ban blues
I've got the hosepipe ban blues
I've got the hosepipe ban blues come on and give me some rain
Went in my garden I had beer on my mind
I like some cans, but not the watering kind
...
The waterbutts are empty and the ground is dry as dust
My plants are all thirsty and so fill the cans I must
...
We can usually expect rain when Wimbledon is on
But this year all we're getting is the hot and blazing sun
…
We brits are getting frazzled from all of this sun
Look after the gingers coz you know they're gonna burn
…
So get out there and do a dance or pray to get some rain
But regardless of the weather we brits always will complain
...
Rock on!
