Slim pickings, but that's ok (An "Over 20 Club" Showcase Post)

Yay me! I've been invited to the Over 20 Club for completing 20 freewrites in the 5-Minute Daily Freewrite Challenge by @mariannewest. I'm very happy and excited to be part of this. You see, when I first discovered the 5-Minute Freewrite Challenge, I wasn't sure what would come out of it. I was just glad to find a means to help me shape up my writing habit. Who knew I would be part of a generous and active community, too?

As part of my "induction" to the club, I was asked to showcase 3 of my favorite freewrites. But, I'm a little intimidated and embarrassed to chose my favorites. I'm also a little apprehensive because, with only 21 freewrites under my belt, it might be slim pickings. So, I thought, why not choose based on my experience writing them, instead? So, with that in mind, here are my three posts for this showcase...

6 years, 6 months, and 10 days (Prompt: Quit)

This entry was the first time I wrote something personal for a freewrite. I've been avoiding writing about personal stuff before this entry. But when I saw the prompt, I knew I couldn't not write about my experience quitting smoking.

My goal was simply to share, mostly with non-smokers, that nagging your loved ones to quit smoking won't help. It'll just make them feel bad or immune to your nagging. From my experience, the best way to help a loved one to quit smoking is to help them understand why they're really smoking in the first place. Because believe me, once you figure that out, quitting will suddenly be the easiest thing to do. But until that happens, quitting will be impossible.

Needless to say, after writing this post, it has been easier to share my personal experiences with my freewrites.

Everyday chalk (Prompt: Chalk)

This was my first poem on Steemit and my first blog post to be featured in the FreeWriteHouse Poetry Digest, where they described the poem as a "musing on the fleetingness of life".

I can see how that makes sense. Here's a confession, though. That's not my intention, at all. In fact, I had no intention when I was writing the poem. I was literally just listing the ways people use chalk everyday, adding descriptive words here and there, and jotting down common phrases. Then, I realized that if I cut out most of the text, rearrange the lines, and change some of the words to make them rhyme, I actually have a poem.

It was pure coincidence. But, it worked, so I tried it again with another prompt. That's how I came up with my mango poem, I listed the ways I like to eat mango. It seems to work only when the prompt is an inanimate object, though.

#3
Would you have parachuted to the ground? (Prompt: Parachuted)

This was a very simple entry. It just started with a question and everything pretty much flowed from there. I'm including it here, simply because I admire creators and inventors. Probably because I'm not one, and I want to be one sooooo badly. So, since I've written an ode to mangoes, chalk, and even coffee, before, why not include this post in the showcase as a mini ode to inventors and creators, too?

So, there you have it. My Over 20 Club Showcase Post. It's been a lot of fun reading these posts again. And I hope you enjoy reading them, too.

And because I can use it now...
