Clement Freud

Sir Clement Raphael Freud (24 April 1924 – 15 April 2009)[1][2][3] was a British broadcaster, writer, politician and chef.

The grandson of Sigmund Freud and brother of Lucian Freud, he moved to the United Kingdom from Germany as a child and later worked as a prominent chef and food writer before becoming known to a wider audience as a television and radio personality. He was elected as a Liberal Member of Parliament in 1973, retaining his seat until 1987, when he received a knighthood. In 2016, seven years after he died, three women made public allegations of child sexual abuse and rape by Freud, which led to police investigations.[4]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clement_Freud#Child_sexual_abuse_allegations

In June 2016 allegations were made in Exposure: Abused and Betrayed – A Life Sentence, an ITV documentary broadcast on 15 June, that Freud was a child abuser in the late 1940s and the 1970s.[23][24] Two women came forward to accuse Freud of molesting them.[25] Sylvia Woosley said she was 11 when he began abusing her. The second woman, who remained anonymous, said that Freud groomed her from the age of 11, abused her at 14, and violently raped her at 18.[4][26]

On the day of the documentary broadcast, Lady Freud issued an apology to both women. She accepted the claims and issued a statement of sympathy for his victims, saying: "I sincerely hope they will now have some peace."[4][26]

A third woman, Vicky Hayes, has alleged that she was assaulted and raped by Freud.[27] It also emerged that Operation Yewtree had been passed Freud's name in 2012 when two alleged victims made accusations to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).[28]

Scotland Yard was examining the details of the allegations and detectives were said to be looking into the possibility that Freud had associated with other alleged abusers at the time of the claims.[29] Allegations have also been made of predatory behaviour towards female students during his time as Rector of the University of Dundee.[30]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clement_Freud#Radio.2C_music.2C_academia

For many, Freud was best known as a panellist on the long-running Radio 4 [BBC] show Just a Minute. Freud performed a small monologue for the Wings 1973 album Band on the Run and appeared on the album's cover.

In 1974, he was elected Rector of the University of Dundee [Same University as Kate McCann] and served two three-year terms. A generation later, in 2002, he was elected Rector of the University of St Andrews, beating feminist and academic Germaine Greer and local challenger Barry Joss, holding the position for one term.

A rector ("ruler", from the Latin regere and rector meaning "ruler" in Latin) is a term used in non-English-speaking countries for a university chancellor. In the sphere of academia, it is the highest academic official of many universities and in certain other institutions of higher education, as well as in some secondary-level schools.

The appointment of Knight Bachelor (Kt) is a part of the British honours system.

It is the most basic and lowest rank of a man who has been knighted by the monarch but not as a member of one of the organised Orders of Chivalry. Knights Bachelor are the most ancient sort of British knight (the rank existed during the 13th century reign of King Henry III), but Knights Bachelor rank below knights of the various orders.

There is no female counterpart to Knight Bachelor. The lowest knightly honour that can be conferred upon a woman is Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (DBE) – which, technically, is one rank higher than Knight Bachelor (being the female equivalent of 'KBE' or Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, which is the next male knightly rank above Knight Bachelor). Also, foreigners[clarification needed] cannot be created Knights Bachelor; instead they are generally made honorary KBEs.

Like other knights, Knights Bachelor are styled "Sir".

ITV investigation: Politician Sir Clement Freud accused of child sexual abuse

Two women have told ITV Exposure of the abuse they suffered at the hands of Freud, who died in 2009.

Sylvia Woosley said Sir Clement, who was a close family friend and 14 years older than her, initially started to groom her and touch her inappropriately when he lived close to her parents' house in the South of France, kissing her on the mouth.

He took me to the beach. We went swimming. He took me on the bus and we went up to the mountains to see a friend of his. And he came quite frequently, and he bought me clothes and he bought me presents.

He had a certain power over me which I didn't understand and because it was something new, and it was a man, and I was desperate for a father’s love.

So it was the first time, aged 10, that a father figure comes into my life...

He'd stroke me and he'd kiss me at the back of the bus on the mouth...It was horrible and I didn't like it. I was disgusted and upset.

– SYLVIA WOOSLEY

Sylvia was too scared to tell her mother about the abuse and thought her ordeal was over when Sir Clement moved back to the UK a year later.

But when her parents' marriage broke up when she was 14, she was sent to live with Freud, his new wife and baby daughter and the abuse escalated.

Exposure spoke to a second woman, on the condition of anonymity, who said she was groomed by Freud in the 1970s, when he was an MP.

He would write letters to her at boarding and take her on trips to parliament. She said in 1974, when she was 14, Freud tried to lock her and her friend in a basement.

In 1978, he invited himself over to the woman's family home, while her parents were away, to cook dinner. She said Freud raped her that night.

Sir Clement's widow Jill Freud, 89, told Exposure she is "shocked and deeply saddened by the claims."

This is a very sad day for me.

I was married to Clement for 58 years and loved him dearly.

I am shocked, deeply saddened and profoundly sorry for what has happened to these women.

I sincerely hope they will now have some peace.

Clement Freud accused of raping another teenage girl as evidence mounts that he was a predatory paedophile

Sir Clement Freud groomed and raped a teenage girl and then told her “if you’re pregnant ring me”, it has been revaled, as more victims came forward with fresh allegations.

Vicky Hayes, who is now 64, described how the former Liberal MP took a fancy to her during a visit to her father’s restaurant in the 1960s, when she was aged just 14.

After becoming friends of the family, he lavished her with attention and then one night when she was 17 plied her with alcohol and raped her.

Mrs Hayes has described how she went police to report the incident following Freud’s death in 2009, but was not taken seriously.

Her claims came amid mounting evidence that Freud, who was one of the country’s best loved personalities, was a predatory paedophile, who used his power and influence to target young women for decades.

A former student at Dundee University, where Freud was rector in the 1970s, claimed he abused his position to sexually exploit young female students.

And child abuse charities confirmed that they had received reports in the past accusing him of molesting youngsters.

Mrs Hayes agreed to waive her right to anonymity and make her ordeal public after reading harrowing accounts of two other girls, one who was just ten, who were raped and sexually assaulted by Freud.

Mrs Hayes said Freud had no right to his reputation as a “pillar of society” and ought to be posthumously stripped of his knighthood.

When she was 17 he asked her to attend Newmarket Races with him which meant staying overnight, but he assured her parents there would be a housekeeper present.

She said: “On the way he stopped at restaurant, he plied me with champagne. He didn't drink. I had never had it, I was 17 and was very inebriated. He drove to the house. There was no housekeeper just us.

“He showed me to a room, I got out my nightie, assuming naively I was going to sleep alone. Clay said ‘no need for a nightie get in’, he told me I couldn't put it on.

“I lay there naked he got in and I just lay there afraid, scared and he forced himself on me and took my virginity.”

She said the following morning when she was sober he had tried to rape her again but she had managed to fight him off, after which he had simply dropped her off at the station.

She said: “His parting words to me were, ‘If you are pregnant, ring me.’ That was it... As if he had done this before,” she said.

Mrs Hayes said she was paralysed with fear and did not tell her parents because she worried her father would kill Freud if he ever found out.

Later when they had wanted to invite him to her wedding she had to make an excuse to avoid him being there.

She said he had tried to rape her once more when she was married and pregnant, but she had managed to fight him off again.

After Freud’s death she decided to report the incident to Suffolk Police, but said while they interviewed her, she felt they were not taking her complaint seriously.

A spokesman for Suffolk Police said: “An historic allegation of rape occurring more than 40 years ago was made to Suffolk Police in 2014, against a man who was deceased.

“This was formally recorded but as the suspect was no longer alive, there were no further lines of enquiry. “

Within hours of the initial allegations being revealed on Tuesday, more people had come forward with evidence of Freud’s predatory behaviour.

Following the claims, Lady Freud issued a statement in which she expressed sorrow for the victims and said she hoped they could now find some peace.

But it has now emerged that she had not even seen the film when the statement was issued.

Last week her son, the PR guru Matthew Freud, and daughter Emma, a renowned broadcaster, responded to an invitation by ITV to watch the film, before subsequently issuing a statement in their mother’s name.

Clement Freud child sex abuse: son Matthew Freud cancels party tonight

Mr [Matthew] Freud has so far made no comment about the revelation that his father abused girls over a period spanning at least four decades.

Sir Clement Freud, who died in 2009, had been "on the radar" of child abuse charities even before his death.

http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/680405/How-Much-Did-Lady-Freud-Know

16 June 2016 by Jane Warren

How Much Did Lady Freud Know?

Sylvia, who was then aged 49, had been looked after by the couple from the age of 14 after her mother’s marriage broke down. But five years later in 1957, the 19-year-old had left the Freuds’ house under a cloud after she confessed to the family’s nanny that far from looking after her, Clement had been abusing her from the age of 10 – two years before he met and married Lady Freud following a whirlwind romance.

At the time of her daughter’s allegations Sylvia’s mother – who had met Clement at a house party she threw in the south of France when he was a 24-year-old hotelier and Sylvia was a little girl – had been appalled by her daughter’s claims. She apparently forced the girl to ring Jill Freud, then aged 30, and tell her that she had been lying when she told the nanny about the sexual assaults.

But 30 years later Sylvia had something important to say to Lady Freud, the woman who had so generously welcomed her into her home as the daughter of her husband’s old friend and supported her for five years while she found her feet and a job.

And what Sylvia had to say was shocking. She told Jill, mother of Clement’s five children, that she had not been lying all those years before and that Clement Freud had in fact abused her. Lady Freud’s response was perhaps more shocking still. Far from being appalled, Sylvia remembers that Jill admitted that: “I think now it’s possible that what you said was the truth.”

The implication is that when Sylvia left the Freuds’ home as an impressionable teenager telling stories about her benefactor’s inappropriate behaviour, Jill found the claims preposterous. However, in the intervening three decades between accusation and denial and the revocation of that denial, something had gone on within her marriage to Freud that had taken her from a position of disbelief to one of horrified acceptance.

Far from defending her late husband who died in 2009, or denying Sylvia’s claims – made public in a TV documentary broadcast last night – Jill was quick to apologise for her husband’s actions and stressed that she was “shocked and profoundly sorry for what has happened to these women”.

The documentary also contained revelations from a second woman, who remained anonymous, that the late Liberal politician, TV chef and radio quiz panellist had sexually assaulted and raped her on her parents’ bed in 1978 after becoming her “surrogate father figure”. While stopping short of raping Sylvia, Mrs Woolsey described how Freud “used to sort of touch me a lot, quite a lot” while she was living in his home. On one occasion, as he molested her at the age of 14, he told her: “You feel just like your mother.”

In that instant Sylvia realised “he’s slept with my mother”. It appears that Freud had easy access to the girl because Jill’s career was taking off and the two were often left at home together. At this point it appears Jill was unaware of what was going on. Guilelessly on one occasion Jill even invited Sylvia to share breakfast in bed with her and her husband, the actions of a loving woman whose own children, including broadcaster Emma and PR guru Matthew, would be born a decade later.

When Jill got up to make the breakfast, Sylvia offered to help but Jill told her to “stay where you are with Clay” – the nickname used by Clement’s family and friends. In the documentary Sylvia says: “I knew what was going to happen” and detailed yet another assault that occurred while Jill was out of the room. Certainly the Freuds’ marriage was an unusual one. When it began, Jill was the bigger star by some order of magnitude – an unusual state of affairs in 1950.

Then in 1975 when Jill was 48, she chose to have an affair with a much younger man. In 2001 it emerged that the writer Will Self’s brother, Jonathan, had conducted an affair with “June”, a fortysomething married woman, while he was 16 – claims that were published in Jonathan’s memoir Self Abuse.

At one point in his book Self writes: “There was no question of deceiving June’s husband as they had an open marriage.” June was in fact Jill Freud. When Clement Freud was asked by an interviewer if the claims were true, the “perplexed, detached” expression on his face as he claimed he didn’t know what an open marriage was left his interviewer feeling that his evasion was “polished”. The interviewer found his subject both “spooky” and “unreadable”. And he wasn’t the only person who found him so.

The writer Hunter Davies was invited to the races for Freud’s 70th birthday, along with friends such as the Lloyd Webbers, John Mortimer and Melvyn Bragg. “I can’t say I know him well,” Davies wrote in a newspaper account of the day. “I’ve discussed him with people whom I assumed knew him much better than I did and they said, no, they didn’t really know him either.”

It seems that no one apart from his long-suffering wife truly did.

Clement Freud, My Part in his Downfall

Commenters on this blog directly caused the exposure of Clement Freud in the ITV story. I published an anodyne obituary in 2009 giving my memories of Freud. One commenter wrote:

He was a notorious old goat and his pursuit of young women could verge on the sinister. I met one of his young ‘victims’ who told me about a job interview with him turning into a very traumatic experience.

And a second wrote the startling

Writing as one of his 1000s of sexual ‘victims’,

still surviving, terrified as I write for fear he is not yet quite yet dead – the man was an evil, conniving,

ruthless user for his own bottomless ego of all he came into contact with.
Our children – boys and girls are all that much safer for his demise.

And that is just the tip of an iceberg of political and media dirty dealings that reaches into the heart of the broken Britain he has left behind him.

His family will now, unfortunately, reap the rage and revenge of those he destroyed and their much needed justice for his many heinous – still untold – actions.

Six years later I was contacted by a journalist working for ITV who had leads on Freud and looking for more evidence. He had dug up those comments on my blog. Using the magic of the internet, I was able to trace the last commenter and put them in touch, with their permission, with the ITV team.

I also told them an anecdote I myself recalled. I was a young First Year Rep on Dundee University Students Association Council while Clement Freud was Rector. One day the then President of the Students Association, Ian Morris, came out of his office in a terrible mood after a phone call from Freud, saying that Freud had asked him to line up female students for him and was trying to use him as “a pimp”. This was not paedophilia but it was unpleasant – Freud was 35 years older than the students he was targeting.

It then all went quiet for a year before ITV contacted me this morning to tell me the story was running.

It is hard to know what to make of Freud owning a holiday villa close to where Madeleine McCann disappeared. Clement was apparently not in Portugal at the time. When you add in the fact that the McCanns’ sleazy “spokesman”, Clarence Mitchell, works for Freud’s son Matthew, the coincidences do add up. I am not jumping to any conclusions at present. But I found the following fascinating.

Clement Freud assured Kate McCann she had nothing to fear from the cadaver dogs giving a positive response inside the McCann’s hire car, hired after Madeleine “disappeared”. They had no evidential value. “So what are they going to do? One bark for yes, two barks for no?” asked Freud.

Sir Clement Freud “preyed on female students” while Dundee University rector

Mr Murray said he had his own experience of the conduct Freud engaged in while at Dundee.

He said: “I remember personally that he was definitely extremely interested in the female students.

“I was aware of him rounding up girls and taking them to the casino for a night out. That was one of his things.

“He was a sexual predator, I guess you would say. These girls were adults of course, but it still felt wrong and unpleasant.

“Freud was 35 years older than the students he was targeting and he was their rector.”

Sir Clement Freud exposed as a paedophile as police urged to probe Madeleine McCann links

Detectives investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have been alerted to the fact that Freud had a villa in Praia da Luz, Portugal, the resort where the three-year-old went missing in 2007.

He befriended the McCanns in the weeks after their daughter went missing, entertaining them at his house on two occasions and keeping in contact by phone and email.

The McCanns are said to be “horrified” by the discovery that Freud was a paedophile.

His family, who include the PR executive Matthew Freud, have said that Freud was not in Portugal at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance and that they have not been contacted by police.

Summary and Conclusions

Clement Freud was a very powerful and prominent man; the grandson of the famous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, a Liberal Member of Parliament, Rector of Dundee and St. Andrews Universities, Celebrity Chef, BBC Broadcaster, and was knighted by the Queen.

Clement Freud almost certainly was a pedophile and sexual predator throughout his life, and was only revealed after his death.

His wife Jill (or June) acknowledged the allegations and apologized to the victims.

Jill is also alleged to have had an affair with a 16 year old Jonathan Self whom also claimed that Clement and Jill had an open marriage.

It is alleged that police and/or child abuse agencies were warned about Clement Freud before his death.

Clement Freud befriended and entertained the McCanns just after Madeleine's reported disappearance.

McCann's spokesperson Clarence Mitchell worked for Clement Freud's son, Matthew Freud.

Stay tuned for more on Clement Freud's connection to the McCann case.

The story of Clement Freud is an important one in the entire #PizzaGate picture as it shows that even the most prominent, powerful, and beloved people can be involved in child sexual abuse, while getting away with it until at least their death.
