Madeleine: Our Daughter's Disappearance and the Continuing Search for Her
Thankfully, though, there were some nice surprises, too, arising in particular from the kindness and friendship of some wonderful people now entering our lives.
At the beginning of July we received the following letter:
Dear McCanns,
I have a house in P da L, been ashamed of the intrusion to your lives by our media . . . and if you would care to come to lunch/dinner at any time before Wednesday next, do ring and let me know.
I cook decent meals.
Sincerely,
Clement Freud
Iâm embarrassed to admit that Gerry and I thought this letter was a hoax; more embarrassing still, while we were vaguely aware of Sir Clement, we had to have our memories refreshed by Sandy and Justine before we could place him exactly. Mind you, he wore so many hats â humorist, MP, gourmet, gambler, press columnist, advertiser of dog food, radio and TV personality â that he was hard to pin down.
Gerry responded with a phone call and Sir Clement invited the seven of us there at that time â Gerry and myself with Sean and Amelie, plus Trisha, Sandy and Justine â to lunch the following day. He would be heading back to the UK a few hours later. Sir Clement was eighty-three by then, but his intellect was still razor-sharp (he was appearing on the demanding Radio 4 panel game Just a Minute right up to his death in 2009). Iâm usually very intimidated by people with brains the size of planets, but Clement was incredibly warm, funny and instantly likeable. His opening words were âCan I interest you in a strawberry vodka?â It was midday.

Revealed: Police launch probe into what Clement Freud knew about Maddie as we uncover new details about ex-MP's disturbing relationship with the McCanns
The McCanns attended the luncheon accompanied by Gerryâs sister, Trisha Cameron, and her husband Sandy, and their then PR adviser Justine McGuinness, a former Liberal-Democrat parliamentary candidate. Though McGuinness and Freud had a political affinity, I am assured that the pair had never previously met and she did not fix the meeting.
I hesitated for a split second, rapidly trying to work out if he was joking. His expression, as always, was deadpan. Not wanting to appear unsociable, I responded, âEr, OK then. That would be nice.â Of course, Clementâs remark about cooking decent meals was tongue-in-cheek: among his other accomplishments, he had trained as a chef and was for many years a food writer and restaurant critic. I can confirm that the lunch he prepared for us that day was bloody marvellous: watercress and egg salad followed by a chicken and mushroom risotto â the best risotto weâve ever tasted before or since. Clement cheered us up with his lugubrious wit, and would continue to do so by email after his return to England.
Sean and Amelie were talking about Madeleine quite a lot by now. I wore a locket with a picture of Madeleine inside, and Amelie had taken to opening it. âSee Madeleine,â sheâd say, or âNight night, Madeleine!â And then she would give her a kiss.
Started to feel a bit âfunnyâ again. My fear for Madeleine is creeping back. Itâs so hard to block it. Sometimes I wonder if I should try and pretend that she never existed to make it easier, but I just canât.
Thursday 30 August was another milestone we could hardly bear to think about. It should have been Madeleineâs big moment: her first day at school. Sheâd been so looking forward to this. She had talked about it excitedly, while in my mindâs eye I had pictured her in class, having fun and making lots of new mates. Now all her friends would be starting without her.
It was an awful day. Every hour, Iâd see her standing there in her new uniform, smiling at me. I cried, I prayed and I held my husband and children tightly. We could make things right for her. If only we could get her back we would work through anything and everything sheâd endured. We would make sure that her life was as full and as happy as it should always have been.
Clement Freud returned to Praia da Luz on 31 August and called Gerry that day. âIs it true, Gerry?â he said, without preamble.
âWhatâs that, Clement?â
âThat youâre close to a breakdown and needing medication?â
Very funny.
âI have a lot of empathy with the Express though, you know,â he went on.
For a split second Gerry thought he was serious. âWhyâs that?â
âWell, you see, we both suffer from poor circulation.â
Thank God for people like Clement who kept us smiling. On the night of 1 September I dreamed about Madeleine for the first time in four months. I was astonished that this hadnât happened before. The workings of the mind are impossible to fathom. It was a good thing it hadnât, because it was such a dreadful experience â far more painful than anything that had occurred in real life since the night she was taken â Iâm not sure I could have survived it in the early weeks.
We had a call from one of the girls at the childrenâs nursery school. âGuess what?â she said. âMadeleineâs here! Sheâs been here for a couple of days. Sheâs fine.â We rushed to the nursery immediately. And sure enough, there was our Madeleine. She looked beautiful, just as I remembered her. I ran over to her, my face split by the widest smile, the tears running down my cheeks, and just held her and held her and held her. Although I was dreaming, I could feel her. It was as if parts of my body that had been hibernating for four months suddenly began to stir. I could sense the cold, dark days lifting as I luxuriated in warmth and light. And Madeleine was holding me, her little arms wrapped tightly round me, and it felt so good. I could smell her. I could feel her with every one of my senses as I soaked up this heavenly moment.
My Madeleine. I wanted to stay like this for ever. And then I woke up.
Ice began to course through my body, driving out every endorphin and remnant of warmth. I didnât understand. What was happening? How could this be? I could still feel her! A heavy boot connected with my stomach and the ache in my chest was worse than Iâd ever known it. I was struggling for breath, almost as if I were being strangled. Please God, donât let her go! Stay with me, Madeleine. Please stay with me. Donât go â stay with Mummy. Please, sweetheart, hold on. I love you so much.
I started to cry. The crying built into seismic sobs. An unearthly sound, like the howl of a wounded animal, was coming out of my mouth. The crushing pain in my chest intensified to the point where I thought I was going to die.
Iâd been with her. And then she was gone. Again.
We were not going to be questioned as witnesses, Ricardo finally admitted. âSo what will our status be, then?â Gerry pressed him.
âItâs called arguido.â [suspect]
As if weâd never heard the word.I dropped my head in my hands in utter disbelief. I began to shake and cry. I shouted at Ricardo, âWhat are you doing? Why are you doing this? I canât believe whatâs going on! This is ridiculous. Itâs despicable.â I shook my head over and over again. âThis canât be happening. This just cannot be true!â
What kind of country was this? And while the PJ were going down this track, leading the media and public to believe we were responsible for our daughterâs disappearance, who was looking for Madeleine?
I remember crying out in despair, âWhat will our parents think? How will they cope with this? What are you trying to do? Destroy our family completely?â These were of course rhetorical questions, but they would subsequently be thrown back at me as some kind of proof of a guilty conscience. My remark about our parents in particular was perceived as strange and suspicious. To me it was a completely understandable reaction. We love our parents and were greatly concerned about their health and emotional state. They had lost their granddaughter. They had seen their own son and daughter in extreme pain and distress and every aspect of our characters ripped to shreds in the newspapers. Theyâd been through so much already, and now this.
âŠ
My immediate worry was Amelie and Sean. If this farce continued in the same vein, and we ended up being formally accused of doing something to Madeleine, people were going to start calling for the twins to be taken away from us.
âŠ
Our plans for the evening went out of the window. We cancelled an interview we were scheduled to give Paris Match and dinner with Clement Freud.
âŠ
We made several more frantic phone calls ourselves â including one to Alan Pike, to let him know that we were now entering fantasy land. After dinner with the family, Gerry and I got Sean and Amelie ready for bed together. We would do whatever it took to protect our precious family and make it whole again.
Sean was so gentle as I was lying with them tonight. He gave me two kisses on the lips and put his arms around me while Amelie was chat, chat chatting!
At 9.50pm, I rang Clement. âCome on round,â he said. âItâll be nice to see you. But youâll have to forgive my night-time attire.â
We found Clement watching a cookery programme, dressed, as promised, in his nightshirt. It was so ordinary and comforting, a bit like going to see your grandad after a horrible day at school. He gave me one of his looks and a giant glass of brandy, and managed to get a smile out of me with his greeting: âSo, Kate, which of the devout Catholic, alcoholic, depressed, nymphomaniac parts is correct?â
http://www.dictionary.com/browse/nymphomania
Retrieved: 27 January 2017
nymphomania
noun, Pathology [disease].
- abnormally excessive and uncontrollable sexual desire in women.
His response to our catalogue of horrors was merely to raise an eyebrow. Clement had this way of making everything seem a little less terrible. When he heard about the dogs, he remarked laconically, âSo what are they going to do? Put them on the stand? One bark for yes, two for no?â He was right, of course; it was ridiculous.
A couple of hours later, fortified by our brandies (it was my first-ever taste of the stuff), some useful snippets of advice and several amusing anecdotes, we left our friend feeling quite a bit better than we had when weâd arrived. The shock of that day, and of what we were now facing, on top of the trauma of Madeleineâs absence, never left us for a second, but it was interludes like this that gave us just enough strength to carry on.

Emails between 'paedophile' Clement Freud and Madeleine McCann's parents to be probed for child sex abuse inquiry
Emails between 'predatory paedophile' Sir Clement Freud and Madeleine McCann's parents are set to be probed as part of a child sex abuse inquiry.
Messages exchanged between the late MP and the parents of missing Madeleine will be submitted to an inquiry into historic abuse allegations, according to The Star.
A woman who says she was a victim of Freud claims she told police about his links to the family, but nothing was done.
Now Vicky Hayes, 64, says she she reported her concerns to police two years after reading Kate McCann's book Madeleine.
Vicky had found that Freud appeared to be a private person who did not enjoy the media spotlight and found the idea of him entertaining the McCanns, after Madeline disappeared, odd.
She told ITV News: "I read Kate McCann's book and was immediately upset and anxious that Clement Freud had invited the McCanns to his home.
"He was a private man, not the type to suddenly befriend a couple who had intense media attention. It really jarred with me, left me feeling very uneasy."
"That's why I contacted the police, when I read Kate McCannâs account, I wanted the detectives to know what I knew about Clement Freud.
"My purpose was for officers to investigate why he invited (them)."
The McCanns are said to be âhorrifiedâ by the claims that Freud was a paedophile.

Summary and Conclusions
Recall from Part 8 that Clement Freud was a prominent and powerful British politician and celebrity, that 7 years after his death (he died in 2009) he was exposed as being most likely a pedophile and sexual predator.
Kate and Gerry McCann claim that they first met Clement in July (2 months after Madeleine's reported disappearance), after she claimed he sent them a letter randomly inviting them to his house for dinner in Praia Da Luz.

Sir Clement Freud exposed as a paedophile as police urged to probe Madeleine McCann links
Kate appears to adore Clement's wit, intellect, and especially his cooking.
Kate randomly includes in her in book a phone call conversation in which Clement calls Gerry on August 31 after landing into Praia da Luz joking about Gerry having a mental breakdown.
In September when the McCanns were officially labeled as arguidos (suspects), they were panicking as to the prospect that the police think they were involved in Madeleine's reported disappearance, so during that very same day the first person they go out to meet is none other than Clement Freud, a man they have only met ONCE before! Unbelievable!
During their meeting, Kate recalls in her book how calm Clement Freud was, as well as including a joke he made about Kate possibly being an alcoholic and/or having an abnormally high sexual disorder⊠WTF!
Not only that but Clement ridiculed the cadaver (corpse) dogs evidence which was being used to allude to Madeleine having been dead before the reported disappearance and thus not actually abducted.
During this meeting, as well as in their first meeting, they all enjoyed drinks, joked around, and Kate was grateful for the advice she received from Clement, again a man they hardly knew and have only met once before.

The True Story of Madeleine McCann -2
This video illustrates the cadaver dog evidence and all the places they smelled a possible corpse, including the McCann's apartment and their rental car!
I highly recommend you watch it as the evidence is pretty clear that Madeleine almost certainly died before the reported disappearance.
This entire connection just raises more and more questions, namely the following:
- Why was the alleged pedophile and sexual predator Clement Freud rushing to defend this couple he just met once?
- Why was he assuming they were innocent after they were just named arguidos?
- Why is he joking with this couple he hardly knows about Kate being a possible alcoholic and nymphomaniac?
- Why was Clement, a man the McCanns barely know, the first person they meet with after they are named arguidos?
- Why is Clement ridiculing cadaver dog evidence that has been routinely used in courts across the world?
- What are the odds that Clement Freud happens to be exposed as most likely a pedophile and sexual predator?
On top of all that, at least one of Clement's alleged rape victims claimed to have reported to the Police about Clement's strange link to the McCanns, to the police 3 to 4 years ago but was not taken seriously!
And as expected, the mainstream media only reported about the strange Clement Freud and McCann connection AFTER Clement was exposed as an alleged pedophile and sexual predator.
Also as expected, the only news outlets to report the Freud / McCann connection BEFORE Clement being exposed, was the alternative media.
It is clear that the McCanns and Clement Freud almost certainly knew or knew-of each other well before their claimed first encounter.
The McCanns and Freud email exchanges are reported to be probed by police, but it is highly unlikely that these will be released to the public or properly investigated, given the police and mainstream media's apparent deliberate cover-up of this caseâŠ
