Hello everyone. Welcome to my hunt for Larry the postman for the 6th day of October, 2023. Gentlemen, it was a successful outing for most of the clubs from the premier league that are participating in the Europa League competition. Results were favourable to them unlike their counterparts in the UCL. Liverpool who played at home against Union Saint-Gilloise won (2-0), West Ham United who played away to Freiburg also won (1-2) while the third team Brighton and Hove Albion played out a (2-2) away to Olympique Marseille. Fantastic results althrough.
Larry begins his look at today in history from the middle east. He finds out that on this day in 1973, on the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur, Egypt and Syria launched an attack on Israel, which suffered terrible fatalities; nonetheless, Israeli forces effectively fought back, and the conflict ended inconclusively.
From the middle east, Larry moves over to Japan. He finds out that on this day in 2000, an earthquake of magnitude 7.3 happened near Sakaiminato, Japan, the most severe earthquake since the disastrous Kōbe earthquake of 1995, but damage and casualties were relatively limited because the epicentre was in a sparsely populated area.
From Japan, Larry goes to the world of basketball. He finds out that on this day in 1993, Michael Jordan announced his retirement from professional basketball with the words "I don't have anything else to prove," only to return in March 1995.
From basketball, Larry moves over to Egypt. He finds out that on this day in 1981, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat was assassinated by members of the Muslim opposition's extremist wing.
From Egypt, Larry goes to Syria. He finds out that on this day in 1930, Hafez al-Assad, Hafez also spelt Ḥāfiẓ, President of Syria from 1971 to 2000, who brought stability to the country and established it as a major influence in the Middle East was born in Qardāḥa, Syria.
Finally, Larry rounds off his look at today in history from the USA. He finds out that on this day in 1951, W. K. Kellogg, an American industrialist and philanthropist who formed the W.K. Kellogg Company in 1906 to make cereal goods for breakfast died in Battle Creek.
Having seen all these pieces of historical events, Larry zooms off to begin his daily deliveries.
