Why Social Media Software Sucks

Has anyone noticed how much the user interface for Skype sucks for example? It’s getting worse with every “upgrade”. Now I can’t even edit the fields for entering alternative numbers when I add a new contact. The interface is optimized only for swiping and clicking, and minimal typing. Ditto the messaging feature in LinkedIn which forces my avatar photo to appear on every Github link I share and which loses message history.

Because in order to pump up their stock price and sell the most advertising, they need more users … any users as long as they click ads. So do not dare make the software (e.g. user interface) too sophisticated nor target too high of intellectual quality which would cause attrition in the middle of the IQ bell curve.

See this StackOverflow topic.

In other news, the EU’s GDPR and the USA ready to emulate once the liberals get back into power, is destroying the tech sector and will cause an exodus of the remaining engines of economic growth to leave for Asia.

But that’s okay because it is all part of the trend of chaos.

P.S. perhaps the title of this blog could have been, “Google is destroying the USA’s tech sector.”

EDIT: George Gilder in his talk about his book Life After Google explains that free goods aren’t really goods, because there’s no price discovery nor liability to the customer. He elaborates in a Forbes interview. He and I have similar perspective on A.I. and the Singularity nonsense.
