Sinopsis
Este libro relata la historia de Nicolas Hook o Nick, un chico de 19 años que desde los siete se formó como arquero de arco largo. La historia trascurre entre Inglaterra y Francia, en el año 1413. Nicolas es un hombre muy despierto y un experto en el uso del arco largo, con una excelente puntería, y dotado de una fuerza fuera de lo común para manejar arcos largos de mayor tamaño y peso.
Tiene como enemigos a la familia de Ton Perrill. Discordia que se ha mantenido por más de dos generaciones desde que los Perrill asesinaron al abuelo de los Nick en una taberna. Para mejorar la trama se les suma a los enemigos de Nick Hook, un cura llamado Sir Martin.
Nick cree que está maldito, pensamiento que ha sido cultivado por su abuela que lo corrió de su casa cuando tenía 16 años. Esto lo ha llevado a ser un hombre muy religioso y con mucha fe en Dios. Tom es seleccionado por su señor Lord Slayton para que, con otros arqueros, que incluían a los hermanos Perrill, fueran a Londres para unirse a los arqueros del Rey de Inglaterra Enrique V.
Para evitar que una mujer llamada Sarah sea violada Nick se mete en mucho problemas que le cambian toda su vida. Sarah es hija de un viejo arquero que son acusados de ser herejes por ser lolardos.
Sarah va hacer violada por el cura Sir Martin, Nick lo golpea, porque le ha prometido al padre de Sarah protegerla. Además, Nick siente que Dios le habla y le pide que salve a la muchacha. Por Golpear al cura es acusado de traidor y condenado a la ser ahorcado. Es aconsejado y ayudado a escapar por William Snoball. A pesar del esfuerzo de Nick Sara es asesinada. Nick Se escapa, convirtiéndose en un proscrito y se une a los arqueros de Henry de Calais.
Los arqueros de Henry de Calais son contratados como mercenarios contratados por el duque de Borgoña para proteger la ciudadela de Soissons en Francia. Esta ciudadela es atacada y tomada por el ejército francés, Nick junto a los arqueros luchan contra los franceses, pero queda solo cuando todos huyen, y no le queda otra que salir corriendo y esconderse.
En su huida llega a un convento donde defiende a una novicia llamada Melisenda, de ser violada y asesinada por un noble inglés. De nuevo comienza a escuchar en su mente las voces de los santos Crispín y Crispiano, que le indican como rescatar a la chica.
Melisenda es hija bastarda de un noble francés llamado Seigneur d’Enfers Hook. Después de escapar de la ciudadela de Soissons, llegan a Inglaterra donde conoce a Enrique V y se une a los hombres de Sir John Cornewaille como arquero.
Junto Enrique V y Sir John y el ejército inglés, Nick y Melisenda se unen a la invasión de Francia en 1415, primero atacando y conquistando el bastión de Harfleur, donde destruyo sus murallas con sus bombardas. Para dirigirse hacia Calais, con un ejército debilitado y enfermo con menos de 8000 hombres: 6000 arqueros y 1500 caballeros y soldados de infantería, donde después de un paso de un rio se encuentran con el ejército francés y el día de Crispín y Crispiano, el 25 de octubre de 1415.
Otros personajes relevantes en la trama
Michael Hook: hermano pequeño de Nick, también arquero, pero no tan diestro como su hermano mayor, de carácter alegre y con un punto de vista positivo de las circunstancias que vive.
Padre Christopher: cura, confesor y amigo de Sir John Cornewaille, que a diferencia del cura Sir Martin, cumple con sus funciones de sacerdote. Es también un guerrero y se hace muy buen amigo de Nick y Melisenda.
Peter Goddington: Centenar (es el jefe de todos los arqueros, veintenar es el que queta al frente de un pelotón de 20 arqueros) de Sir John Cornewaille, hombre de carácter fuerte, pero muy justo, un gran guerrero y luchador. Se hizo amigo de Nick.
Lord Slayton: señor de Nick, es un hombre justo, pero invalido, esta siempre en una silla, por tener que usar un par de muletas por una herida de guerra que recibió en la espalda en su columna vertebral.
William Snoball: Administrador y jefe de los arqueros de Lord Slayton. Es amigo de Nick.
Los gemelos Thomas y Matthew Scarlet: arqueros a servicio de Sir John, hombres de carácter alegre y muy diestros con el arco largo. Muy amigos de Nick.
- Sir Martin: Cuñado de Lord slayton y enemigo a muerte de Nick, aliado de los Perrill. Este odio hacia Nick es motivado por no haber podido conquistar y violar a la madre de Nick. Este cura es un hombre larguirucho y desgarbado, siempre vestido con una sotana negra, y su locura y maldad se puede ver en su mirada.
Robert Perrill y Tom Perrill. Enemigos de Nick, Thom el mayor y Robert el menor. Que desde el inicio de la novela con el padre Sir Martin le hacen la vida imposible a Nick durante toda la trama de la novela. Estos hermanos son altos y delgados, con una nariz muy larga y ojos hundidos que le dan apariencia de pendencieros, tenían un parecido físico con Sir Martin.
Seigneur d’Enfer, este personaje juega un papel muy importante para la vida de Nicolas Hook y Melisenda. Es un caballero francés. Personaje muy importante en la vida de Nick y Melisenda. Experto guerrero y luchador y espadachín, conocido también como el señor del infierno, por su ferocidad con que luchaba sus combates.
Reseña
Azincourt es una novela interesante, con una narración entretenida, con buenas descripciones de sus personajes, y el ambiente por donde se desenvuelven. A mi parecer algunos capítulos pueden ser tediosos, pero solo por pocos párrafos, lo que no quita lo interesante de la trama.
El escritor hace muy buena descripción de la batalla de Azincourt, describiendo como se desarrolla la batalla, el papel que juegan los arqueros en el desenlace de la misma y como se desplazó el ejército francés para enfrentarse al inglés. Esta parte me gustó mucho ya que pude visualizar como fueron los enfrentamientos de Nick y sus arqueros contra los franceses y de Sir John Cornewaille combatiendo a los caballeros ingleses, definitivamente ese capítulo merece leerlo varias veces.
El desenlace de la novela me dejo muy buen sabor, y el epilogo de la novela complementa muy bien lo que paso después con los protagonistas y personajes de esta novela, además la explicación histórica que hace el autor es muy buena. Fue una lectura muy entretenida, que me permitió visualizar e imaginar cómo era la vida de un arquero y un caballero durante la guerra de los 100 años en la edad media, y sobre todo como fueron las circunstancias que llevaron a que se produjera la batalla de Azincourt. br/>

Synopsis
This book tells the story of Nicolas Hook or Nick, a 19-year-old boy who was trained as a longbow archer since the age of seven. The story takes place between England and France, in the year 1413. Nicolas is a very wide-awake man and an expert in the use of the long bow, with excellent marksmanship, and endowed with an extraordinary strength to handle long arcs of greater size and weight.
He has as enemies the family of Ton Perrill. Discord that has been maintained for more than two generations since the Perrills murdered Nick's grandfather in a tavern. To improve the plot is added to the enemies of Nick Hook, a priest named Sir Martin.
Nick thinks he is cursed, thought that he has been cultivated by his grandmother who ran him from his house when he was 16 years old. This has led him to be a very religious man and with a lot of faith in God. - Sir Martin: Brother in law of Lord Slayton and enemy to death of Nick, ally of the Perrill. This hatred towards Nick is motivated by not being able to conquer and rape Nick's mother. This priest is a lanky and ungainly man, always dressed in a black cassock, and his madness and evil can be seen in his eyes.
Robert Perrill and Tom Perrill. Enemies of Nick, Thom the eldest and Robert the youngest. That since the beginning of the novel with father Sir Martin they make life impossible for Nick during the whole plot of the novel. These brothers are tall and thin, with a very long nose and sunken eyes that give the appearance of quarrelsome, had a physical resemblance to Sir Martin.
Seigneur d'Enfer, this character plays a very important role for the life of Nicolas Hook and Melisenda. He is a French gentleman. Very important character in the life of Nick and Melisenda. Warrior expert and fighter and swordsman, also known as the lord of hell, for his ferocity with which he fought his battles.
Review
Azincourt is an interesting novel, with an entertaining narrative, with good descriptions of its characters, and the environment through which they unfold. In my opinion some chapters can be tedious, but only for a few paragraphs, which does not take away the interesting part of the plot.
The writer gives a very good description of the battle of Azincourt, describing how the battle develops, the role played by the archers in the outcome of the battle and how the French army moved to face the English. This part I liked a lot because I could see how were the confrontations of Nick and his archers against the French and Sir John Cornewaille fighting the English knights, definitely that chapter deserves to read it several times.
The outcome of the novel left me very good taste, and the epilogue of the novel complements very well what happened next with the protagonists and characters of this novel, besides the historical explanation that the author makes is very good. It was a very entertaining reading, which allowed me to visualize and imagine what was the life of an archer and a knight during the 100 years war in the middle ages, and especially as were the circumstances that led to the battle of Azincourt.
