Upcycling bedside drawers (Part 2)

Whoa! It's been almost a week since my last post! 😱

I can only blame the heat. Seriously some messed up, roasty days up here...

Though, there is a really nice breeze flowing through the house at the moment which could explain why Im finally writing a post today.

Work on the dresser has been slow going due to chronic case of indecision, which resulted in a few paint overs and mock trials.

Here's where I left you in part 1

1 drawer painted with a pearl/metallic effect on the trims and the top still white.

That night we decided tp bring the drawers in to see how it would look against the dark grey of the bed.

While I was there I figured I'd see which crystals would make the best drawer pulls.

As you can see the pearl/metallic is sort of blending with the bed and making the space darker.

Not really sure if I wanted to give up the pearl/metallic effect I figured I should just keep going and get the teal on the drawers ~ which actually took 2 days to do.

A day or so later..

It rained and thankfully the drawers were dry and ready to come inside. By then I accentuated the copper on the drawer trims to colour over the "chameleon" effect.

Still on the fence about the colours, I decided to to a mock of colour possibilities.

Loving that pink, but teal still rules.

In the end..

I got rid of the pearl/metallic effect and kept it teal and copper. Up close you can still see sparks of teal, blue & gold on the drawer trims but from a distance it looks like it's just copper.

I was considering adding design on it by way of wall stickers or stamps or stencils

But decided it might look too busy once the crystal drawer pulls are on.

So everything kinda rests on my drawer pulls.

Here's what it looks like with it's original drawer pulls. I try to imagine it in copper sometimes but, I dunno.. I think it's too old school basic regardless. What do you think?

They need to be bold and beautiful and be able to pop off the teal. Unfortunately my crystal guy is only open on weekdays and I need to physically go there and pick out 18 pieces of whatever I decide on.

Why 18?

Cos this baby is next!

This way our bedroom furniture will look like a legit set by the time I'm done šŸ˜‰

Cost so far

For those wondering and thinking "Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to buy a set?"

Easier ~ probably!
Cheaper ~ ohh hell no!

To put it in perspective here's a screenshot of drawers like ours from Amart Furniture.

Amart furniture is a budget furniture chain in Sydney.

Here's a similar but cheaper one.

Double list price for a set....

Plus it's so generic. Where's the flavour at?!

Our drawers (from Gumtree) which are solid cedar, made old school way with proper joins not just screwed and nailed together was $50 for the set.

I mean come on?! Bargain much?!

Total spend so far..

2 bedside tables = $50
Taubmans 1l Primer = $28
Taubmans 4l Semi Gloss teal = $20 (mistint!)
Art Deco metallic copper = $0 (in my stash)

= $98!

Add $60 for the other drawers = $158 for the whole bedroom set.

Fully custom, nothing else like it anywhere, especially once the drawer pulls are on.

The drawer pulls will probably set us back at least $100 since I have my heart set on using crystals and I want big chunky ones. I'd prefer agate slices or medium size crystal geode/clusters ~ just depends on what I can find.

Then again, I can always get the resin out and see if I can make orgonite or geode handles myself..

My point is. One does not always need extravagant amounts of money to get what they want as long as they're willing to get creative with solutions.

Project to be continued...

Have a great Wednesday everyone!
