Here in Brazil, there has been a product for many years that is Ethanol derived from sugar cane. This fuel curiously had its development boost due to the restrictions on oil imports imposed during the Second World War.
It was at this time that a procedure that still exists today began: the addition of Anhydrous Ethanol to refined gasoline. This addition is mandatory by decree of the Brazilian Government and was initially intended to avoid a fuel shortage crisis due to problems with oil imports during the war.
According to Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Company), at times the percentage of addition of Ethanol to Gasoline reached 40%!
This meant that the vehicles consumed more, as they were not prepared to work with Ethanol, but with Gasoline. You can imagine that in a few years government incentives came to increase sugarcane production followed by various facilities for building plants. This allowed the construction of engines fully adapted to Ethanol.
Now, the engines are adapted to both types of fuel, in any mixture proportion. They are called Flex cars, perhaps this means that they are "flexible".
So, in Brazil it is common for drivers to observe fuel prices when filling up their vehicles. The choice of fuel could be made based on several nuances:
- Environmental: The fuel with the lowest environmental impact is Ethanol
- Autonomy: The fuel that provides the greatest range is Gasoline
- Price: here we have a problem, because as fuels have different yields, their cost must be calculated taking this yield into account.
Ethanol delivers a yield of 70% compared to Gasoline
Research carried out by Inmetro (National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology) indicates that this should be the reference value for comparison purposes between Ethanol and Gasoline.
This means that if a car is capable of traveling 10km on 1 liter of gasoline, the same car will only be able to travel 7km on 1 liter of Ethanol.
I know that there are different measurements in international markets, replacing Kilometer/Liter with, for example, Liter/100 kilometers.
In any case, this reference value may not apply to your car, for various reasons. So it would be very important for you to know your yield factor. of your car And to do this, simply write down the average consumption when running on Gasoline, and also the average consumption when running on Ethanol.
Remember that when changing fuel, you need to drive many, many kilometers until your car is adapted to the new mixture. So, I suggest you run through at least three tanks of the new fuel before doing the math.
My income
Carrying out tests with my vehicle, I arrived at the following numbers:
- 9.4 km/L as average consumption using Gasoline
- 7.4 km/L as average consumption using Ethanol.
Doing the math, we have 7.4/9.6 = 0.77 = 77% yield. Based on this number, I must make decisions when refueling my vehicle.
In the most recent case, see that the value of fuels is interesting:
Multiplying 5.39BRL by 0.77 we have 4.15BRL, this means that Ethanol is more advantageous as long as its price is below 4.15BRL.
As the current cost is 3.59BRL, the difference is huge! I know that these prices should rise soon, especially because there are harvest and off-harvest periods that exclusively affect Ethanol, but taking advantage of the fact that environmental and price issues are aligned, that's why I'm currently filling up with Ethanol!

Aqui no Brasil existe a muitos anos um produto que é o Etanol derivado da cana-de-açúcar. Esse combustível curiosamente teve seu impulso no desenvolvimento devido as restrições de importação de petróleo impostas pela da Segunda Guerra mundial.
Foi nesta época que iniciou-se um procedimento que existe até hoje: a adição de Etanol Anidro na Gasolina refinada. Esta adição é obrigatória por decreto do Governo Brasileiro e teve seu primeiro intuito em evitar uma crise de falta de combustível por problema de importação de petróleo durante a guerra.
Segundo a Embrapa (Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária), em alguns momentos o percentual de adição de Etanol na Gasolina chegou em 40%!
Isso fazia com que os veículos consumissem mais, pois não eram preparados para trabalhar com o Etanol, e sim com Gasolina. Você pode imaginar que em poucos anos vieram incentivos governamentais para aumento da produção de cana-de-açúcar seguida de diversas facilidades para construção de usinas. Isso permitiu a construção de motores totalmente adaptados ao Etanol.
Agora, os motores estão adaptados aos dois tipos de combustíveis, em qualquer proporção de mistura. São os chamados Carros flex, talvez queira significar que são "flexíveis".
Então, no Brasil é comum que os motoristas observem os valores dos combustíveis no momento de abastecer seus veículos. A escolha do combustível poderia ser feita por várias nuances:
- Ambiental: O combustível de menor impacto ambiental é o Etanol
- Autonomia: O combustível que proporciona maior alcance é a Gasolina
- Preço: aqui temos um problema, pois como os combustíveis tem rendimentos diferentes, seu custo deve ser calculado levando em conta este rendimento.
Etanol entrega um rendimento de 70% se comparado à Gasolina
As pesquisas realizadas pelo Inmetro (Instituto Nacional de Metrologia, Qualidade e Tecnologia) apontam que esse deve ser o valor de referência para efeitos de comparação entre Etanol e Gasolina.
Isso significa que se um carro é capaz de rodar 10km com 1 litro de gasolina, o mesmo carro conseguirá rodar apenas 7km com 1 litro de Etanol.
Sei que existem medidas diferenciadas nos mercados internacionais, em substituição do Quilômetro/Litro com por exemplo Litro/100 quilômetros.
De qualquer forma, esse valor de referência pode não se aplicar ao seu carro, por motivos diversos. Então seria muito importante que você conhecesse seu fator de rendimento. do seu carro E para fazer isso, basta anotar o consumo médio ao rodar com Gasolina, e também o consumo médio ao rodar com Etanol.
Lembre-se de que, ao mudar de combustível, você precisa rodar muitos e muitos quilômetros até que seu carro esteja adaptado à nova mistura. Então, sugiro que rode ao menos três tanques do novo combustível antes de fazer as contas.
Meu rendimento
Realizando os teste com meu veículo, cheguei nos seguintes números:
- 9,4 km/L como consumo médio utilizando Gasolina
- 7,4 km/L como consumo médio utilziando Etanol.
Realizando a conta, temos 7,4/9,6 = 0,77 = 77% de rendimento. Com base nesse número devo tomar as decisões na hora de abastecer meu veículo.
No caso mais recente, veja que o valor dos combustíveis estão interessantes:
Multiplicando 5,39BRL por 0,77 temos 4,15BRL, isso significa que Etanol é mais vantajoso enquanto seu preço estiver abaixo de 4,15BRL.
Como o custo atual está em 3,59BRL, a diferença é gigantesca! Sei que esses preços devem subir em breve, até porque existem períodos de safra e entre-safra que afentam exclusivamente o Etanol, mas aproveitando que estão alinhadas as questões ambientais e também de preço, por isto estou atualmente abastecendo com Etanol!
