I was at my mom's place to feed the cats while she is out of town with my sister and her husband. Well, I bend down to do something then as I rose up my jacket caught on something and I could hear a tear.
I looked in the mirror and seen a rip at the seam where the arm sleeve is connected to the main body of my jacket. Yes, I will admit my favorite jacket is pretty old. I know more than a decade, but maybe even two decades.
It's the jacket that I wear around the house or to my mom's. I won't wear it at a family gathering. I will wear a more newer jacket at a family gathering.
Well anyway, I don't want to throw out the jacket, so that means I will have to mend it. Since my jacket is black and I do have a needle with some black thread then I am good to start sewing things together.
I remember as a kid I always had socks with holes in them. I remember watching my mom mend things with needle and thread.
So as a kid I wanted to mend my socks as everyone knows it is not very comfortable with your toes feeling the inside of the shoe.
I remember some mistakes I made with sewing. Sometimes if you sew the sock wrong it looks like someone took a bite out of the sock. Yes, I did that.
My mom showed me a trick that remedied that look. She told me to use a light bulb. Yes, so then I put the light bulb in the sock and then I sewed it. After I was finished it looked pretty good.
I don't know if kids know how to mend their socks with needle and thread now days. Well, if they wanted to learn to do that I guess they can just look at a Youtube video about mending a sock.
When I was in high school back in the mid 1970's we had Home Economics. I did take a cooking class in Home Economics. I just looked it up. Now days Home Economics is called, Family and Consumer Sciences.
I think I like Home Economics better as a name, but I am old. I hear that these Family and Consumer Sciences are decreasing in interest.
If I was running one of those classes I would have a class called Shopping for the Family. Some of the things I would cover is how to read the produce codes. This would be important to know which produce is GMO or grown conventionally or grown organically.
Using simple math try to get the students to get the most nutrition from the lowest budget. It could be like a fun game and teaching them how to feed of family of 4 or 5 with less money.
Somethings I see today are people that buy a bunch of food then at check out they have to put food back cause of not enough money.
I would like to get the students to use their cell phone to calculate every item they put in the cart and include tax for hot food or non-food items.
This way the student will know within a certain dollar amount how much to purchase the items in the cart without going over the amount of money they intended to spend.
No I don't plan on being a teacher, but sometimes I think about stuff like that.
So anyway, I wrote all this cause I wanted to mend my old jacket.
