Fire? 🔥

This morning I was just finishing up my morning routine.

  • Breakfast ✅
  • Shower ✅
  • Make Up ✅
  • Hair blowed dried and flat ironed ✅
  • Dressed.... mostly....

Then our smoke detector went off!!!

Ummmmm..... 😳

I rushed through the house trying to find the source of the alarm. Was there smoke? No. Was there flames? No. The alarm going off was in the living room. I touched the wall and ceiling but neither were warm. Then the alarm stopped!

Hmmmm.... 🤔

Maybe it was just the battery? But that is usually just a chrip, not a prolonged alarm. I pressed the battery test button and all was well.

To be honest, I didn’t really know what to do. We have an old house. It was built in 1930, so who knows if there are possible electrical issues behind the walls. I was nervous but thought maybe this was just the unit acting up. Until....

The alarm started again!

💩

Ok... second alarm. I called my husband and started gathering things. Sweatshirt, car keys, purse. I got my dogs into crates and we all sat outside while the piercing alarm continued. Husband didn’t answer his phone....

So, I called 911!!!

The dispatcher was very kind and I relayed the story of my morning. I told her I wasn’t sure if this was an emergency or if my detector was just acting up. She assured me that it was better to be safe than sorry, and that is was their job to respond to these sorts of calls. With that she sent a fire truck to our house!

🚒 After 5 minutes, the fire truck arrived and two calendar worthy firemen stepped out.😍 They asked me some follow up questions and we went inside the house. After a quick look around we went to the offending unit.

One of the firemen stood on a chair to examine the smoke detector more closely. He removed the unit from the ceiling and gave it a shake before declaring, “I see the problem!”

It turns out a tiny SPIDER was inside the smoke detector! The spider’s movement was blocking the sensors inside. This was making the alarm go off and on!

NOT the actual spider. Source

The fireman tried to get the spider out of the unit with a dinner knife. 😂🤣 It didn’t work. The two were so kind though and even offered to come back to my house to install new smoke alarms for free! I declined their offer. ☺️
