Marvyn the goat had a long white beard and a mean look in his eye. He reminded me of a man I met in the Hung Parliament pub on the High Street last August.

He (the old man, not the goat) was obviously drunk when I walked in at two-thirty in the afternoon. He laughed as I pulled up a stall and asked for a coffee.

"Go to a cafe, you arse," he said, an alcoholic slur blurring his words. "This place is for real men."

The goat seemed to have the same look in his eye, although he could stand still without falling over.

"Marvyn," I said. "You need to get in the van. We're moving, and the new owners don't like you. They don't want you in their field." Marvyn didn't answer just stood there staring at me. I tried again. "Here," I offered him a handful of feed. "Come on, mate. You'll like the new place." I smiled. "It has a nicer view."

Marvyn turned away.
